I bought this car at the old age of 16 - still on my Ls, on the 9/9/09. I always loved VLs, wanted one and it had to be manual.. hate driving autos. I told my oldman and he said i better start working, so i did... i was a labourer when i was about 15 for $100 cash a day working in school holidays. I worked hard and saved it all knowing it'd pay off one day. I called up countless number and test drove around 7 or 8 VLs, all over priced or in crap condition, except for 3. I was going to buy one neat as SL 5 speed from a car yard until the guy backed out on the deal. Another was a hi priced berlina with a calais conversion and 5 speed of ebay untill it was sold it from under me. Third time lucky, i found mine on calais turbo by chance, got it for $2200 in well taken after, yet rusty conditon.
Just leaving from the blokes house to drive back to mine as we jsut signed off the deal. Man - i could not stop smiling, never been so happy.
It runs and drives well. I had to a few things to it when i got it.. reco'd radiator, water pump, timing belt and tensioner a CAS later on as it is afterall a VL lol.
Next was a new stereo... Got a killer deal on 4 speaker, deck, amp and a wiring kit. Bought a 12inch MTX for ebay for $30 and pick up an amp for it.
Made a new parcel shelf out of 15mm MDF upholserted in blue carpet and screwed up from the boot through existing holes, looks neat. Next made a sub box to neatly squeeze in opposite the spare tyre, wedged underneath the boot gutter, also neat
I did a defensive driver training course at eastern creek...
I picked up a cheap exhuast on ebay second hand, 2 1/4 with a single muffler and came with a spare empty cat for $50. Put it on and was impressed with the note!
Then came the body work which it still in process. Getting all of dents straightend out, and cutting out the fairly bad rear rust and welding a new panel in. My panel beater is a lazy **** and only works sundays lolSo its coming along slowly. But he does very good work.
Donor panel... absolutely no rust! And i mean not even chipped paint and surface rust.
How it looks at the moment
UPDATE!
All the dents and dings have now been beat, bogged and primered and it is now straight as gun barrel.
The keener eyed ones amongst you will notice its got no boot and for good reason. Started the serious body work today got the rear window and boot lip rist cut out and the panel in.
Got the boot lid off and popped the rear window out, it was not pretty!
Like, bad....
After it had been cut out.
On the donor panel, the glue used to hold the window in was very thick, sticky and moist... on mine it had fully dried out, absorbed moisture and rusted away my window lip
And the car looking like this
Much better- that took no time at all
Yet to be welded in yet, just made to fit and screwed in - thats next week.
How it sits currently.
All bogged up and sanded. Just needs a final sand, paint, and the window to be put back in - and its doneNo more rust blowing out, no more leeking boot.
Its getting there!
When its done it'll of still worked out to be cheaper then buying other rust free VLs for $4000+ which i was looking at, and now i know its totally rust free and been done properly as im planning on keeping the car for a while...
All bogged sanded and painted. Will be getting a coat of white tomorrow, the window put back in and the boot lid back on. Great success.
Im on school holidays now, being the young punk that i am, and i'm gunna knock up a custom boot layout which im pretty pumped for, should look awesome.
The front is jus starting to blow out.. few bubbles along it so thats next.
I got a few quotes for the front windscreen, and the best was supply of a new front screen, fitment and a new rubber top and bottom all for $200 so ill be chasing that up and itll all be sorted then!
I was hunting around everywhere for a LSD and was almost going to mini spool it when i couldnt find a LSD for less then $300..
Until i found a 2.92 25 spline borgwarner LSD from a 302 XD falcon for $80
Went out to WSID the other night for $50 of fun. Ran 3 16.3's and one 16.2.
Atleast im consistently slow
The car is currently sitting on axle stands with no diff in it as it is in the process of a LSD.
My LSD centre is at the diff shop currently being reco'd with two new bearings and being re shimmed so itll be tight as
Im going to get them to fit it to my stripped diff, then ill come and bolt it all back into the car.
Itll be good fun at an aggressive driver training course that im attending shortly and during '+100hp' wet weather. Hey, im a P Plater.
Started the front windscreen. The rust does look to be nearly as bad as the back (touch wood) but still needs doing.. do it once, do it right.
I took all the plastic trim of and peeled of the rubber molding.
I wanna keep the trim for the OG look and it luckily didnt snap, just broke the plastic tabs underneath. No biggue, ill just glue them back on
Piano wire
WOOOOO
Got the front windscreen out. Not much rust in there, just a few little holes and some rust bubbles. Despite everyone telling me the windscreen would snap, it wouldnt of cracked if i didnt accidentally pinch the glass with a pair if pliers when i was trying to pull out the trim clips. I was quoted $180 for a new screen fitted with a new seal, which isnt bad at all.
Got the front done. Can anyone give me any feedback for putting in a new windscreen... does everything fully get stripped out and new gear put in? The rubber lip visible from the inside of the car with the wire mesh inside it?
Rust free VL? I THINK SO!
Got my new windscreen in today, supplied and fitted for $180, nice.
Used a one piece mould. I wanted to put the factory side plastic trims back on for the original look...
But the new mould is wider then the original one so it looks out of place. No matter! Now i've just gotta bog up the locating holes

Coming along nicely.. and what r ur future plans for this old girl? Welcome To JC.
Thanks mate. Future plans?! i just havnt finished copying my build thread from calaisturbo forum its about 6 pages long... these pics are about 1.5 years old^^^
Installed my new component speakers and central locking motors. Much better sound and can take alot more power.
Im physically installing the central locking and alarm myself.. installing the motors, running all the wires, drilling grommet holes and running wires to the doors etccc.. and im then taking the car to be wired up professionally.
I hid my tweeters in the factory speaker hole which i was pretty happy with
What it looks like at the minute
tarted rubbing my car back for a respray (finally) Stripped all the trim off and got busy with the wet and dry. Im feathing out as many chips as possible but some of the bigger chips will need to be primerd and then sanded again... there is alot of paint chips.
The door bars are a pain to take off. I was expecting the worst (snapping) but with a long sharp knife and some patience they came of eventually.
Resprayed my chasers aswell. Therse no clear on yet in the pic.
Theyll be looking good with chrome center caps, chrome trims and chrome nuts
Otherwise ive just been busying myself with stuff like finish off the wiring for alarm/central locking and respraying my mirrors, wiper arms, badges etc.
ITS GETTING THERE!
My chasers all painted up. Chrome metal center caps, chrome nuts and chrome dress trims dress it up nicely!
Badge looking nice and new. I got out the angel hair paint brush from when i was a kid and used to paint car models and detailed it up. I think im only just getting over the effects from inhailing all that model glue
Patches is almost ready for paint, about 85% done.
whats left to do;
-Sand the bumpers and door bars
-Give the car another once over with 1200 wet dry
-Paint all the featherd paint chips with a spray can and dry sand them smooth
-Paint! (Hoooooopefully next saturday 5/2/11)
Got all my central locking, alarm and immobilisers wired up... i love it, works perfectly! And gives a bit of peace of mind.
Currents pic from today
top coat, primer, top coat primer... must of been in a minor prang at the back.
Around 90% of the paint on the car is the original... unless its been taken back to bare metal for a respray, which i doubt.
On the bonnet there two different colour grey primers and another coat of black underneath that... weird.
More progress pictures. Since last time ive primered all the featherd chips, dry sanded them out with 1200. A few need doing again cause theyre still a bit 'stepped' from being sanded back to metal.
Whats left is rubbing the door frames, the sills, pillars and all the plastics (bumpers, bars, and rear 1/4 window trim), bog the old trailer plug hole in the bumper... i sheeted it from the back with perfex and plenty of sikaflex... and paint!
old windscreen trim hole welded up, just needs to be grinded, bogged, sanded, painted, sanded, painted again and sanded once more. too easy
The car is officially being painted this weekend
It has to be slotted in around the shops own work, and they were too busy last week to do mine.
Once piece windscreen mould with welded, bogged and primered windscreen trim holes. very nice
My bible
How she sits at the moment
This time tomorrow patches will be painted
Getting the car on and off the trailer was the biggest head F!&K... bottoming out, timber blocks under the wheels, we were late getting to the spray shop. stressed! We got there in the end and it was all good.
I never though the day would come...
Ive started re assembly, but its raining today so theres only so much i can do. Got my chasers on, all the window trim and a few plastics.
Im so happyI love the colour, its an antique/off/sno white just how i wanted it... not a bright vivid alpine white.. so sexy
All up the spray job cost $1,000 even including paint, with all the prep done by me and on mates rates. not too bad!
Pics with chasers back on, theyre sexy :donatello:
More happy snaps.. Front and rear bumpers on, aswell as headlights. I ordered some TYC head lights and im gonna put the new reflectors and use the Holden lenses cause my lights the moment are a bit more like candles.
The whole front bumper is after market which is was a bit anxious about, but it fit perfect with no mods. Consistent gap on the join and lined up perfect with the original trim.. id recommend them to anyone.
Got the rear windscreen in aswell.. (since above pics) Cant wait til the adhesive dries so i can finally put my venetians in which have just been sitting around collecting dust for the past 6 months
Whats left to do... door bars, door handles, door locks, boot lid, boot locks, venetains, door trims and pump the tyres up. And one other thing... go crusing!
Got a bit more done, got my door strips, boot lid on, rear window, tail lights and my venetians in. Whats left to do is get the door trims and a few interior bits back on, paint the door handles and tail lights plus and garnish satin black cause theyre pretty faded and chipped.
New head lightsOne rainy day ill restore the original lenses and put the glass back in with the new reflectors... looks better then plastics
Pulled the rear end out to be resprayed.. doing it properly usuing plastic primer and clear coat (primer is $20 a can... on apprentice wages, thats what i earn in a week
Bits to be painted. Already sanded them back and got all the scratches out
New look tail lights... tinging is over rated, its all about lightening
My uncle tells me turbos are for skirts and i should put a stroked, cammed LS1 with a T56 and can always put a LS4 in it later on. He can get me a engine and box for $3200 and we can do all conversion work and building for free. So what should i do?
Respraing bits
Ive gotta black out around the tail lights and trim on the car before i put the trims on and then will get pics once its on
Started work on the boot layout today
Ive got an exercise book with about 10 pages full or measurements, sketches, ideas and etcccc. Depending on how good this finishes and if people are interested, i may look into making DIY assembly kits.
Template
Timber blocks will be sikalfexed to boot floor and false floor mounted to them. None of this **** with the box wedged in by the floor as ive seen done before, asking for trouble.
The box will be the right size aswell. I had to work out the area of the template (see how irregular it is -_-) Take my subs box cubic feet specs, convert that to meters cubed and find the right width for the box to meet the specs. All done properly
More updates tomorrow as i ran out of daylight!
Fabricated and assembled most of the box today. Decided to use 12mm ply, MDF is rubbish.. corners blow out and it falls apart. Fits pretty well, ill finish it off tomorrow and get it mounted. Once its fixed in i can work around the box and get everything made up and get it in
Did a bit more work on the sub box, starting to come together
Also did a skidpan day at eastern creek on the weekend... sick fun!
Im not sure if you'll be able to see this video cause youre not friends with me on facebook.. ill upload it to youtube later
Updates

Its been raining latley so that my new excuse for not doing anything on my car lol.
Myself and my good mate brendo got some luvo shots of my car yesterday afternoon on his SLR camera.. some good pics (cheers brendo youre a top bloke)
BEFORE
INBETWEEN
AFTER....
Rest of the pics...
VLT diff woooooo
Picked it up this afternoon. Already pulled it apart and yerp, 28 spline axles and LSD center.
Going to get disc setup of a VN (bolt straight on) And already got a hand brake cable of a mate
Doing a bit of paddock bashing in the VL (cruise for charity)
Collected all my bits.. vl turbo diff, vn calais hand brake mechanism, vn exec calipers and a vl calais hand brake cable. Just gotta strip it all for paint, new pads + h/b shoes and new discs. Sweeeeet
Just puchased a complete set of S2 Blue VLC interior from my good mate BORCI-88. Nicest bloke ever, so helpful!! Answered ever one of my questions, helped out with postage, buying and all the rest of it. Fair dinkum if you ever see this bloke down the pub shout him several beers
Just waiting for postage. Gonna get some new carpet while im stripping it all out. My current one is 5% clean. The rest is sand, dirt and cum shots from the last 24 years.
I started making a type of built in phone and ipod charger.
I took an cigratte lighter - usb port charger for my ipod, pulled it apart and hard wired it up so that it could be hard wired to the cigartte lighter power on the car. I wired it so that the built in fuse would will be used.
I did the same with a nokia cigartte lighter charger.
The charges themselves will be tucked up the inside of the center console at the back, with each charger wire coming though the storage area of the console, so you flip up the arm rest when you need to charge your phone/ipod, grab the cord and hide it away when youre done. too easy!
I posted this up ages ago and never did a follow up.
