    nice car mate, looks clean.

nice vl SL by the looks of it ... good clean first car mate. look after her. and yes it is a rb30e. same motor as a r31 skyline.

Exhaust . go 2.5 inch.... with a high flow muffler and extractors and pod filter just to begin with

and vl's are notorious for ticking noise.. just the lifters/rockers need to be adjusted depending on the level of the noise. most likely its just noisy injectors

as advice i gave to someone else. if its a loud noise... get a big screwdriver and use it as a stethascope and listen to each injector and see if one doesnt make noise. if you find that it means one cylinder isnt firing and its just hitting the plug. but yeah a long handled screwdriver is the auto stethoscope. you can listen all over the motor and find exactly where noises are coming from.

there is a guide to polishing the calais mags on calais turbo.com its a little more involved than just using some polishing cream. for exhaust id go extractors ( i picked up some homebrad ones for $50 and they still sounded great) hiflow cat and then 2.1/4 system with rear resi removed. That will give a nice note. def need some vk berlina rear lights or something and black rear garnish..

    Maybe your brakes?

Oil from your engine? (eg, oil leak or something, and then burning off on the exhaust manifold?) I dunno........just a few ideas.

Yeh could be brakes. Have you done any work on em at all recently?

Brakes usually have a distinct smell - if you've ever smelt the brakes smell before you'll know.
