Since I know nothing about brakes I have an issue
I was driving along, well not really but lets just say I was driving along and then I hear this POP?BANG?CRUNCH? and then I had zero point zero brakes and the pedal is locked solid pretty much. Seems like I broke the booster? I hear constant hissing etc. Anyway that's my story, whos got a theory for me. Driving a VP that you can't even stop at idle is a bit too exciting for me
Sounds to me like the booster cracked!! Can you feel all around it, and see if it's still solid?
How bad was the crunchIs your car running like it has a vacuum leak?

Yes I think I've had an epic failure of the booster somehow. I'll look at in in a couple days, seems like a busted housing all things considered, But realllllly wouldn't like that to happen while at speed
yeah, sounds like a major brake booster failure.

The hissing will be a broken booster diaphragm. As for what else, you won't know till you pull it apart. Do the brakes work when you really stand on the pedal? Where you applying any brake when it went bang?

thats what the hand break is for lol
i wont tolerate cretins aiming to cause problems here at jc and nor will i hesitate to let the moderators know

It broke during a massive stall uplaunched by itself lol and no they dont really work at all. As hard as I can push I have like 1cm brake travel.
Benny has me sorted
"benny says:
when the diaphragms let go the shaft that pushes on the master cylinder plunger cocks to one side and jams rock solid
"
that makes sense![]()

Replace brake booster, its happened to me before too, exactly how you described it. They aren't too difficult to replace.
It concerns me how common this problem is appearing to be![]()

Morton^ when in doubt install a roll cage
What concerns me is that you know how to build a car that goin 0-60 in 5.36seconds, but know nothing about brakes !! guess you must be human like the rest of us. The hissing sound gave it all away, its the only part of the brakes that works on vacuum.
Well I knew the booster was broken, the trick is why is it locked solid :P. I still need to pull it apart and see that for myself. + The car pretty much goes to 60 mph how it does by itself it's not really my fault I haven't done anything to the engine
That is a little unfair. Unless there is obvious corrosion on the outside it is virtually impossible to tell when a booster is going to let go. As for the rest, I know GF well enough to realize he has at least as much knowledge as your normal mechanic when it comes to some of the car systems, and with EFI and others his knowledge is very advanced.
Even the official Holden factory service manual lists the booster as a sealed non-serviceable unit. VP/VQ Series II, Volume 2.
