best way to flush an engine

whats the best way to do an engine flush ive been told 1 part diesel to 5 parts fresh cheep oil and take the fuse out so it dont fire and just crank it a few times then drain what other ways are there just theirs a service coming up and seeing i dont know the full history of the car id like to flush it ?

Nor sure what's the best way but don't use that shit from autobarn it will ruin the seals in the motor needing a rebuild as a result.

whats the point of an engine flush if u cant get it going through all the ports and with a bit of heat

well ive had 1 v6 die from buildup and sludge already id like a way to pre empt that and it wasn't because of me it was past owner not maintaining the thing right

ive always used diesel, but ATF will do fine, get the oil nice and warm then add ur diesel or additive and run it for a bit and drop the oil while its hot.

so is it warm car, add diesel, dump it when it's hot. add new.
is there a point in the cycle to change the oil filter

Don't know about ATF/diesel, but with the bottled stuff (Nulon etc) you warm up the engine, put the stuff in, run it for about 20min (just idling, IIRC it says don't put the engine under load by driving it) then you drain the oil as normal, at which point you change the filter.

Mainlube also make a "flushing oil" where you drain your oil, put that stuff in, run it for a while, then drain again and change filter.

im assuming that i would put it in cold and warm it up i dont think i like the hole pouring diesel into hot oil my self and im aware it has a high combustion rate but i still don't like the idea so from a cold start until warm for me

You can also run a super high detergent desiel oil like Mobil delvac, that will slowly clean it out

another is to fill the car with thinners so thinners are coming out the top then flush it out with water

i must admit i was told a classic use roundup drive the car for 15 min the problem is the roundup and oil have a interesting reaction the chemicals in the round up bind into almost perfect solid ball bearings you can imagine what happens next lol

No matter what do not use a flush on an anything above 80,000k's ! Do as Greenfoam says and use a CI-4/SL rated Diesel oil like Delvac mX or Repco Diesel and use that to clean. Even better is to use a product called AUTO-RX. Order in from the U.S and dollar getting stronger ( I got mine in when we were 92 US cents), or if you really want some i can get you some sent from a Oz distributer and euro engine builder. He's not an official distributer, but orders in boxes of the stuff for his workshops, mainly does performance mercs and BMW's but a very good bloke. It cleans slowly over period of time, not just a quick flush that first of all can dislodge bigger stuff to block a gallery, but cause compression loss issues, seal issues etc.

It seems if you have always used a solvent flush then it should be ok (still with seal damage potential), as your engine it mostly always clean. BUt when neglected can be some nice suprises. The VN seems to be a dirty lil engine if not looked after possibly due to its venting/breathing mechanism.

There are 2 products with high acclaim and proven to work in majority of situations Auto RX and LC-20. For example in my vehicle, i had no top end sludge due to my oil regime that i could see anyway, but after cleaning, increased compression, the engine runs much better, as it cleans up around the ring area. LC-20 is also very good but expensive to get in here.
