is there any difference between the standard headers on a VN seires 1, compared to a VP series 2 motor? Will they bolt up ok? I've been told they were different design, and material?
Series 1 are metal, Series 2+ are cast iron. Both will bolt up to the motor but the y-pieces are different. If you swap headers you will need the same y-piece to suit. Cat-back is the same. IMO the cast headers are a better design but being cast they are known to crack. Mine havnt but.![]()
Yes, they are different. S1 are a tubular steel design, while S2 on are cast iron. And azzfox is correct, the engine pipes are different too.
The cat back however is not the same, in an aftermarket sports system they are, but the factory systems are different. The S2 has a flex in the rear muffler and it joins with a flange, the S1 is a clamp join and has no flex. But having said that, they do interchange.
yes my exhaust has the flex at the rear, just before rear muffler, (i thought this was a resonator lol)
So are the S2 onwards headers, the better of the design? I never knew they were different, i was reading it somewhere on the internet, so i thought i'd find out a little more..
S1 headers have the end two cylinders firing against each other and one in the center. S2+ have all cylinders firing smoothly in the one direction, similar concept to extractors.
The S1 design was rushed to get the car on the road as soon as they could. That is why the S2 has a lot of refinements and is different in a lot of respects.
The S1 manifold is more restrictive as the exhaust gas is forced out by the next cylinder firing.
