Bit of a tricky one!

I have a vr engine/vn gearbox in my e21 bmw. Im trying to get the speedo to work. I've unscrewed the end of the sender off, and i want to plug the existing cable in.

However it doesnt seem to work. Is the cable that goes in a standard thing, as in, would the holden one differ from the the bmw one? The one i've got is squared off at the end. I've thrown the electronic end out so i cant even compare to that
