Can I cut this bit?

So I am installing an amplifier on the back of the rear seats, vertically, on the passenger side, like so (rough demonstration, not installed):

In order to mount it to some 8 to 12mm MDF, I believe that I need to cut this part away. It is the lip of the metal support for the seat back. Pictures will make more sense.

Is it OK/legal to remove this 'lip'? As one can gather from the first picture, the amp needs more room than what is provided by the existing metal. Thus I wish to attach some MDF to extend the flat surface on which I can mount the amp.

If this is not OK/legal, how else could I mount the amp there? It is already a pretty tight fit there.

Someone may correct me but in a word, no.
Much the same as the reason you aren't allowed in enlarge the speaker holes in the parcel shelf. These bits are all there for structural support or backup and if tampered with screw your chances in an insurance claim and potentially make it impossible should you ever need to renew your roadworthy.

maybe try cutting a groove into the mdf with a router or something like...

you can cut it all you want so long as you weld in bracing and get it engineered.
if not, then no, you cant cut it if you ever want your car to be legally on the road again.
