When you are looking at rims, you will see that they say "17x8", or "15x7" (examples). The first number is the tyre diameter, and the wecond is the width (in inches). So obviously, the wider the rim the wider the tyres you will be able to fit on them.

When you get wider than *about* 235 or 245 depending on your ride height, you will have troubles with the tyres rubbing on the guards, but with enough money there are ways around almost anything

Also LEGALLY the front and rear tyre widths must be in a tolerance of us each, from memory its 20mm, but I could be wrong.
Meaning the rear tyres cant be more then 20mm? wider then the front ones, would be a very bastard thing to get done for unless its an insane difference or an "attitude ticket".

If you are talking legality wise, then you are only allowed to have the specified tyres and rims as stated on the tyre placard which is located either in the glovebox or on the drivers door pillar. Not many people follow the placard tyre size recommendation, because if they did, then 90% of the modified cars driving around would be deemed unroadworthy. Exactly whether its an offence to use any other size to what the tyre placard recommends Im not certain 100%.

If you're thinking about 275s, I guarantee you'll need to get those arches tubbed

chopping up the wheel arches of your car, to make them deeper. Often associated with shorter axles to run wheels with big dish
