i have a vp auto and im replacing the motor in it. would it be easier to unbolt the gearbox from the motor and pull just the motor out or pull the whole thing out transfer the box from one motor to the other while its out of the car. i am using an engine crane.
cheers mate. hows the vl going?
will do mate.. i know it runs well.. cant even hear it idling the motor was reco less than 100 000 ago my dad bought it off his mate whos a mechanic who did it. haha the motor is nothing like the rest of the car
personal choice i don't take the box out and Ive done 2 engine changes so far (less bulk to maneuver )

It's a MILLION times easier to take a motor + trans out together. Having done a few engine swaps now, I found it easiest when I did my V8 + manual all in one hit.

i have always taken both out but can see some real good reasons not to.
1 very little trans fluid loss
2 easier to lift engine alone
3 getting the engine and box in by yourself would be a bitch.
ive taken the motor out of my vp twice now. both times with the box still attached. found it a lot easier and reaching in and undoing all the bolts etc. just get a couple of your mate to give you a hand and its a piece of piss.

I've taken out a few engines in my time and in my opinion if you've got a little bit extra time the just take the motor out saves fluids and the V6 is a tiny motor, but quicker to take tranny out.

Yes I know, if you get anymore manly you are in danger of making yourself pregnant!
in short doing it with no help means spliting them incar is easier. If you have help then you can take both together.
Manual = take both out at once.
auto = take engine out by itsself.
I HATE auto fluid dripping everywhere - either from the dipstick , trans cooler lines, tailshaft output.. etc.
plus autos are bulky, heavy and hard to manouver. (and you have trans cooler liens etc etc) and it costs heaps to fill them back up.
i find it easy to just undo the bellhousing bolts, and undo the converter from the flex plate, then hoist the motor striaght up and out of there.
manual can only leak from the tailshaft output area - and you can fill that pretty easy. plus the boxes are small enough to manouver around etc. It's also a lot easier to get the manual gearbox onto the motor out of the car (input shaft splines on clutch etc) - then just whisk it all in at once.
of course if you're changing the trans or doing an auto->manual conversion, I'd pull the whole lot out as one.
If you have the car jacked high enough for the angle, take both out. (i hope the bonnets coming off coz it s$%#load easier) Personally if you changing the engine, i dont get what all the losing fluid stuffs about, I would drain the engine and tranny anyway and give it a service while its out, then fill it back up when its back in. let it drain for a couple of hours if u got the time, you wont get that much oil leaking that way. If you dont drain them, then cover up the extension housing and dipstick hole with a rag and masking tape. Theres no need for the job to be messy, and its not THAT expensive to replace 4 or so litres of each oil and a filter while you're at it. As for water coming out of the engine, what are you gonna do, its just water.
Good luck with it and I agree, get some mates to help, always easier that way to manouver the crane when it got a load on....and of course to have a beer with once the jobs done.

I changed my motor and gear box at the beginning of this year, I found it easier to pull the whole lot out and drop the replacement in. It was a good challange as I have minimal mechanical knowledge really.
Had a good mate, a couple cases of Bourbon and got the job done in no time.
It made a bit of a mess, tranny fluid dripping out, I just had a few flatten cardboard boxes underneath.
Ohh.... Lucky I looked in the thread - thought you were after some lifestyle choice advice for a second. To answer your question - I find it a ton easier to leave the gbox attached when pulling the motor. As for trannies: whatever floats your boat I suppose.
