Ok well i would like to know what the best and cheapest option is for speedo correction, i will be getting 3.9s put in my VN V6 very soon and would like to have the speedo already right so i dont have to go to court anymore.
Its a T5gearbox and going for 3.9 gears minispooled, i was thinking of putting a jaycar speedo corrector in i think there is a Howto thread around from immortality also a mate told me that i could change the gear on the gearbox and it is around $40 just gotta get the right one, does any1 know anything about this or have done it. also what will i get out of 1st my guess at the limiter set normal, isnt very high like 45ish? any info is great thanx

you can buy the gears but its just easier to change the pulses with the jaycar kit.

Do you know a price and where to get one from>?

Got the gears in and put it all back together, now its making noises like a bearing noise again, i took the wheels off and rotors and put it in gear on axle stands and it sounds like its coming from axel bearing, but they are new, also a vibration aswell shaking the car. any Ideas, prob wont be loud enough for a vid record not sure.

did you get the centre shimmed to suit the new gears

no but is seems tight, i had problems with the pinion the pinion shim as to big and it have play back and forth with nut done up tight, but that is now fixed with a smaller shim, but the center is pretty tight and i dont think another shim could go in, just might need some fine adjusting to suit gears.

yip its not the sort of job you can DIY as you need a heap of shims and feeler guages etc to get it right youll chew the teeth on the cogs in no time with it not setup i think it was savage on here cooked his whole diff from incorrect shimming someone did anyway.get a diff place to set it up is allways the best way

It's only about $150 to get gears installed by a good diff/trans specialist, so I'd get it done right![]()

doesnt matter how tight the centre is, your pinion isn't aligned against the crown wheel, i'd say that's the noise right there... this needs to be aligned prior to any x-axis shim alignment.
aZk.
going to 3.9's did you do anything to keep the diff cooler? i read somewhere about putting a new finned cover on it to dissipate heat better
Thanx for the replys guys, the noise isnt as bad now, i forgot to put a small shim infront of crown wheel and also used the commodore crush spacer and the pinion is tight now, i will look around for prices to get the diff shimed propper.
And no i didnt think 3.9s would make a huge difference on heat over the stock gears but if that is the came, a mate has a alloy diff cover plate if that would make a difference. its off a XF.

personally i think your fine, it is spinning with an extra 0.82:1... not sure if its worth cooling options, the diff is fairly well ventilated.

is there any good additives that could be put into the diff?, some1 told me graffite but dunno.

Nulon do a good gear oil additive - G70 I think. It's not essential in a differential, but if you're really keen on smothering your diff in love, it's the best stuff to use imho.

and where can you find this imho
Any Burson/Repco/Autobarn I presume. Burson retail a tube for about $19 I think.

i noticed i have a leak from the seal on the axels they are new seals and put in correct bloody hell, didnt get to drive the car today because my remote for the car ran out of life lol so i was also late to work.

Got a tube of Nulon additive, $15 hav'nt been able to drive it much as i installed some spits and have a flat battery now lol gonna push start her in the driveway haha.

a tube of aditive isnt going to fix an incorrectly shimmed centre![]()

Well looked at the diff abit more and the axle bearings (outer), the cup that the bearing sits in where it gets tapped into the diff moves around, so it could be spinning and doing all type of things, is it suppose to be a tight fit for that cup like it is for the pinion cups?
i thought they just slide in and out but some1 told me different,
Under load the diff makes no noise, and there isnt much noise there to begin with, but when i back off or let the car roll from 60-80 down it makes noise, a mate said he had the same problem, and the pulled the pinion out and he said they put a bigger shim in and leant on it more, so it was tighter any thoughts, if not i will take it out put a stocker in and get it shimmed properly or just leave it in the car and take it to a place either way doesnt bother me.

cups for the bearings do you mean it has tapered roller bearings on the outside ends of the axles with seperate cups like a front wheelbearing does i thought rears were just a 1 peice ball bearing type

the ones i have are tapered, and slide in and out of the diff housing, so no dout they might spin around to, this could be a problem, as i was told they are suppose to be real tight for the bearing to sit in it, and if its loose i will need another diff and put all my gears and bearings in it.

Any car with no deadner 3.45s and UP will make noise, you'll hear it when you back off, the more gears the more noise. Ever heard a old fashioned car/truck with 5:1 gears? you get the idea. The gears will wear out REALLY fast if they are wrong so you will soon know
the BW78 uses tapered roller bearing for the axles. the outer race slides into the housing but it's not a tight fit, on the other hand it shouldn't be sloppy either. with the axle bolted in there should be a small amount of side play in the axle.
get the gears set properly or you risk ****ing em quick.
my diff builder advised me to get a alloy dif cover for mine when i put the gears in. said it will help it run cooler. probably not required for a road car, but cheap insurance for a track day warrior.
to correct the speedo, check in the howto section for a Jaycar speedo corrector kit "howto"
