Hey guys,
This may or may not have happened to someone on here however,
I have a 5.0ltr that we have put a gear set drive (instead of the timing chain) on,
Now this is all working fine, however when putting this the timing marks apperared different to the stock marks ie where they located,
Once we had it on and back together it would not run because due to the fact that the marks were out it has changed the firing order,
Now it runs but i have another problem,
It pops and farts, sounds like its missing and has absolutely no power,
Im thinking that i need to swap injector leads around to match the new firing order, but i am unsure,
Any input would be appreciated guys,
Chad
you're not gonna change the firing order just by swapping some leads...
the order in which pistons arrive at their firing mark after the compression stroke is kinds preset by the crank and internals, and if the cam is lined up properly, the valves will dane in the correct time for all four strokes. Ensure the right leads are connecting to the right plugs. Then, make sure you haven't connected timing gear out by 180 degrees (i've seen plenty of ppl do this)
If it's running like a tractor, it very likely you've got the leads in the wrong order (some are firing early and/or late thinking their plugged to a different cylinder) the timing is off, or CAS is pharked...
Cross fingers you haven't reshaped your valves![]()
ide say the dizzy timing is just out a bit bridge the aldl connector and set base spark timing to 10 degrees with a timing light
I tune the oldschool way fear on the passengers face and knuckle colour cant go wrong
tabbacco is still my favorite vegetable
to elaborate on this, 5ltr runs bank fire, so you should be able to switch over the injector leads on the same bank and notice no difference at all. i'm 99% sure on this, but someone correct me if i'm wrong
no cas on 5ltr, hall effect sensor does that job - unlikely it's bung though by the sounds of it though. like coast said, i'd be checking the leads first, i once got a couple mixed up... BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG, but you may be lucky depending on which ones you got wrong to trick you into thinking it's right by at least running. double check that. then check timing as said. then tell us how you go![]()
oh yeah, good pick-up, my mistake on yabbering about the 3.8 and talking bout CAS...
5ltr runs dizzy, so i can't think of any possible way you could swap leads and maintain any kind of firing order without inducing some chronic timing advance/retard that the ECU wouldn't know about... piston positions relative to TDC is kinda fixed, and stroke order won't change just cause leads are different... i drink too much coffee....![]()
How about you re-fit the straight cut gears properly.
P.S- They'll rattle your shit to death...
Cheers

They sound ****ing horn, but I won't ever run a set again.

Sound like thats what would be best (setting up the gear set drive properly),
My problem is that the dots ie the marks on the gear set drive dont line up as they should has anyone come accross this before?
