    Default Roof lining..

So my roof is sagging. and not just the cloth but the whole thing the only thing keeping it up is the light.. Is there anyway to fix it? th auto trimmer said it was impossible to reuse my lining if its come of? I have a slight feeling his full of it?

You will notice the cloth is attached to a board. The board is pressed to shape, prior to trimming, then glued in. If your board has come unstuck, it is possible to re-use it, it just depends on whether its lost some of its shape over the years.

http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/...r-dscf1305.jpg As a cheap quick fix, i took a rooflining out of a VS,a VP one wasn't available (they fit fine, but you have to cut the hole for the rear view mirror) i picked mine up for 50 bucks from a wrecker, and took around an hour to take the old one out, and put the new one in. I didnt apply any form of glue, or adhessive to mine, as it was a first time attempt, so it dosent sit 100% against the roof, but is hardly noticible, and as you can see, it does the job.....I've also replaced the grab handles and the visors since taking this photo with Calais handles and Velour visors, and it looks pretty good...

I'm not sure on what type of ahesive is used to bond the board the the roof...That "How to" dosen't mention anything about apllying and adhesive of any form between the roof and the board either, whether that's just something from the factory i'm not sure..Any contact adhesive should be suitable for bonding the material to the board, should you choose to do it that way. But i honestly, i wouldn't bother, with the cost's involved, and the time and effort spent (not to mention if you stuff it up) you better off going out to a wrecker like i did, and just pick up another one.

i'll agree with the auto trimmer. the old cloth is too thin to reuse imo. when i took mine out from the vn, you could literally see through it if you held it up. so glue will go straight through it, hence making it look like shit. its probably lost it's shape too. you would have to take it ALL off, scape the foam baking off, get new foam, and once you've done all that you don't really want to ruin the whole job by putting the old fabric back on for the sake of saving $20 to get some brand new stuff...

you've checked between the fabric and cardboard to make sure? usually this is what happens: foam disintegrates, roof lining sags, roof lining comes away at corners, car fills up with orange crap, roof lining comes out

IF you miraculously have a perfectly good foam backing that is still stuck to the fabric but has come away from the cardboard, you can use some selleys heat proof adhesive (spread on not spray on) to stick it back. i forgot it's exact name, comes in a tin. get 1ltr.

when you push against it, its heave its not just cloth. It leaves finger marks in it for a while to like little indenations, I'm scared to take it off because I don't know if I will be able to get it back on. Theres no orange crap in my car thourgh.

orange crap will only come when the lining comes away from the corners.

how heavy are we talking here? if you could poke it up with a cotton bud then it's fabric/foam. if the cotton bud would bend under the pressure then your cardboard has come away from the velcro securing points or has broken. this has happened to my car in the rear - people get a shock when they poke it and realise it's still hard .

yeah, got the whole lot hanging in the back of my VN Calais, and it's really annoying. Seems the velcro let go, but as a result of bending so far for a while now, the fabric has "stretched" a little, and now when you pop the whole thing back into position, there's now a bubble of fabric the size of my hand. So now i've lost motivation to fix the sagging, cause the fabric will just continue to fall away from the backing now...

don't have the time to rip it all out and do a refit...

The board is held in place by the screws from the light socket, any hand holds, the sunvisors and any plastic trimming that overlays the edges. Don't put any adhesive between the board and the metal roof.

Yes, they help to hold the board into place, but an adhesive is also used, you'll see 3, or 4 or so, long beads on glue( or whatever was used) running along the roof when you pull your old lining out....I'm not saying do it, i didn't, looks fine, but if it went to a Professional, i would expect them to do it, as it came from the factory...

there are 'rails' that go from left to right under the roof. these 'rails' have holes in them, which hold velcro clips. the velcro clips then stick to the other velcro that's glued to the cardboard of the roof lining. there's no physical glue between the cardboard and the roof. maybe the glue you're seeing is from the velcro as it may have come apart from the cardboard? my theory is that the velcro clips have broken and no longer stick in the holes in the rails, so the whole cardboard is sagging in the rear.

Hmmm, maybe mine had been re-done at some stage. Mine didn't have any velcro when i removed it. What was there though, looked like silican beads, some sort of adhesive, which had been used i presume to hold the board up in certain sections. I thought it was a factory thing, looks like i was wrong...
