Hey guys,
My mum has broken down and Ive gone down to help her out but am not getting any where fast with this one
The car:
1993 Vp V6 auto
The problem:
Winds over but wont fire, I'm also pretty sure fuel pump is not pumping, does not seem to prime and lines feel like they have no pressure. when i wind it over and turn the key off it keeps winding over for a few seconds?!? Yes i do have spark
The Past:
recently she had battery/alternator problems, i changes brushes in alternator and put new battery in, but she said the battery light has come on a few times since then. She also said the past few days every now and then when putting the car into gear it stalls
My thoughts:
Alternator reg, ignition barrel, fuel pump
Any help would be great as im kinda fixing this down at the shopping center as i have no way of getting the car home just yet. plus i need it back on the road by 4pm today lol
Cheers
Jay
Hope you checked fuel gauge and it has gas ...
when you turn key engine kicks over and over ... and when you turn key back you can hear a whine noise which is the fuel pump ... ??
ok anyhow ... could be the fuse under the bonnet .... but sounds like pumps dead ..
get a plank off wood and where the fuel pump goes into the tank hit around it on the tank and you may get it to work again ... once engine starts ... do not turn car off till you get home or to mechanics ... cause it wont start again ...
It could also be crank angle sensor ?? try poor cold water over the balancer at the back where wires go in , thats the sensor .. when it gets old it overheats and stalls your engine and engine wont start again till it cools down.
Few months ago I was driving ... then stalled ... started while still moving ... backfired and stalled .. black smoke etc .. lol
my fuel pump and crank angle sensor died at the same time ..
Vn executive 1990 200,000kms as of 13/6/08 , oil changes every 5000kms since it rolled out the factory , strut brace for hard cornering, kn pod filter, Ngk iridiums sports exhaust..what else can I say I love my holden![]()

Hi,
1. Alternator if you have changed the individual brushes by soldering new ones onto it, then it will either be faulty regulator contact points (in the same module you removed to put brushes) or on the alternator there are what is called "pots" if one of these has come un-soldered inside the alternator then replace the complete unit with either good second hand or new. But I'd try a new Regulator first.
2. Fuel Pump. If you are getting no sound from the fuel pump, It can be a number of things, but quick check are.
- fuel pump relay located in the engine bay same place the fuses are., you should be able to swap it with the one marked "horn" then press your horn and it will show you if it's blow - no horn =dead relay.
if it is dead then just use the horn one to get you going.
- fuel pump fuse (same as above location). Usually a 15 or 20 amp, there should be one for the thermo fan, that you can pinch to test. But if you have it out, usually you can see through the plastic and it will show you it is burnt out. Quick removal of the fuel line will show you if fuel is getting to the engine, just put the removed hose in a glass bottle to save petrol spills.
You can also spray some fuel into the throttle body, it will run for a second then stall.
3. - if all that fails, then you might have a coil problem, the quickest thing to test this is remove or buy a new spark plug , plug it onto one of the leads, then touch the threaded bit to something metal, eg, inlet manifold bolts, then get someone to slowly crank the motor, (please keep your hands free from the spinning drive belt etc) and if you get spark all is great if not, it can be the coil or wiring to it.
4. It can also be too much fuel in the motor - flooding causing it to never start. so remove the fuel pump relay, fuel pump fuse and give it a few cranks if it starts to kick , replace these items and ur all good to go.
5. IN regards to it stalling, it could be the throttle body position sensor, located bottom edge of the throttle body, replace this and it won't let the motor run under 650rpm.
Hope this helps.
Ciao.....
SNAP, also do what aussie said, fuel pumps are known to die, about $66 gets you a new one, and you can replace them fairly easily from underside of the car.
cheers best of luck
thanks guys,
problem:
Dead full pump
Fix:
bash tank drive home and change it (dam that return line can be a pain lol)
Cheers
