hey guys, this is what i has happen ...... got a second hand car , running fine and thought i would check spark plugs and leads ..... now i changed spark plugs and leads changed them one by one checked firing order and all that now it was running but farting and splatting... then took the dissy cap off clean it up ... and then changed the roter button .... put the cap back on put all leads back on now.. it kicks over and runs just but no power and after running for 5mins the extractors where glowing red hot .. any one could help me would be great ....

think the kids got in when i had the dissy cap off and tryed to started the car LOL dam kids ...

turning the motor over with the cap off won't do anything. ar you sure you got everything back in the right order.

what could be a issue is if the dizzy itself turned as this would alter the timing(but that would require human intervention). with the extractors glowing it does indicate the timing is out

yeh sounds like the timing has been knocked out(dissy might have been a little loose when you were changing the leads) it should be 10degrees advance, the bolt for the dissy is hard to get too, it is on the drivers side at the back at the base of the dissy, its hard to see if you look but you can feel it(from memory it is a 14mm).

dont forget you need to put the car in diagnostics mode to set the timing.

Check you haven't accidentally cracked a plug. Replace them one by one with the old ones and see if that improves things. You may not actually see the crack but it's easily done on those motors.

yeh thanks guys i was reading thro all the other forms.... now i can see where the timeing marks are ... but how do ya turn what i think is the crank shaft ??? so i can line the marks up that is on the pully and the timeing cover? ,,,..... yeh im thinking that i have knock out the timing some how... or would it be that the dissy cap and cause the button is that worn out i should replace the whole dissy too..

yeh have been trying to find the 14mm bolt on there LOL could not see it at all but now that you said driver side i sould be able to find it .... now all i need to do is get the tdc ...then i can put the car in to diagnostics mode ill have to get my self a timing light... yeh kind of thro out the old plugs cause they had no more white on the out side of them .... and all the old leads are gone to cause some where melted and other had duck tape on them ......should of showed ya some pics of the old plugs and leads .... i still got the old rotor button ... but thought putting the new plugs and leads would of made it run better but nah... .. brought this car off ebay so should of looked at every thing first ... but that what happens when ya buy something cheap have to do some work to it

Cracked plug I reckon. OR (unlikely) The dizzy twisted, and retarded your timing

to adjust timing, here's something i've written before. slightly modified to suit your situation.
    tools required:
    14mm spanner cut in half
    timing light

bridge the ALDL connector to put it into diagnostic mode (there is a plug on passenger side under glovebox, has a black and white cable you need to bridge with a paperclip. there are tuts on this - cbf finding them though. probably in this thread). once it's bridged, turn the car on. hook up timing light to number 1 spark lead (the one closest to the front drivers side), and look at the timing marks under the water pump near the balancer. there are 2 tall lines and lots of shorter ones. it goes like this
14 12 10 8 6 4 2 0. 10 and 0 are the tall lines. there are more lines than this but this is all you'll need to look at. now, loosen the bolt at the bottom of the dizzy (dizzy is hidden at the back of the motor drivers side). twist the dizzy, and keep checking the timing to see where it's going. you are aiming for 10 degrees, or maybe 14 if you're running a stock memcal but that's a different story. once done, tighten up that bolt, and check timing again to make sure it hasn't moved.

    WARNING
DO NOT GRAB DIZZY WHEN CAR IS RUNNING WITH YOUR BARE HANDS UNLESS YOU LIKE GETTING SHOCKED. jasons tip: use a couple of pairs of gloves. myself, i just gently grab one of the leads and push the dizzy around from there until timing is right.

foam/levy, do you guys remember what way it is to advance the timing on the dizzy? clockwise, or anticlockwise. im trying to set the standard 10 degrees advance for mine while the engine is out. at the moment its just pointing at the little notch when at TDC, which i think means 0 degrees.

the nut isnt that hard to get to. just get a 14mm ring end spanner onto it

ok yes car up and going all it was. was the timing .. so got a timing light and found that bolt hard to get to when the cars been running for abit .. but all is good now run fine.. and yes the dissy bolt was lose and i must of bumped it or something.. made it go out ... thanks for the great help guys ... save me heaps...

better ask jason for that one to double check. i *think* it was clockwise to retard, anticlockwise to advance. but when i think i'm usually wrong. actually yeah i seriously have no idea. and i'm so damn tired right now, i just want to go to sleep. if you don't have a timing light, i've got one, so when you get your engine back in i can bring that over and you can double check it to see where it's at.

maybe scuba-steve will remember now that he's fixed his problem (good to hear as well!)

um.. well i had to turn mine anti clock wise and that fixed me problem .it was a bit of a anti clock wise and clockwise to start with cause i was trying to see if i could move it or i bumped it and could not move it to start with so stoped had a beer then had another shot move heaps LOL so then i had to turn it clockwise then.. but as i found out only little turns dont take much to throw them out thats for sure...

and stock thinking mine was the same turn it anti clockwise should help just turn a little bit and you should be able to hear the diff .... if not its the other way... lol cant loose out there only problem now i got the batt shit its self on mine LOL .... so out to buy new batt and batt charger ..
