    Default Engine build

Hey guys thinking of buildin a new v6 and i have some ideas but need to get some opinions as i don't know how strong the v6 s1 engine is.
Crank: get it machined 10 thou and get oversize bearings for it?
Block and Pistons : Same thing get it machined for wear and oversized rings?
Heads: I'm debating on getting some Yella Terra heads or getting mine done and customized???
    Cam: Stage 3 Crow cam?
Inlet manifold: Get it customized from a specialist and run a 5 litre T/B with cold air induction and get rejetted injectors with customized fuel rail and 5 litre fuel pump?
Then extras: I already have custom extractors, but mandrel bent, high flow cat through single muffler. Ignition? Coil packs? Top gun 10mm leads and and iridium plugs. Of course i will be doing new oil pump, water pump etc.
But any info on parts, engine strength, or other ideas would be great!!!

are u building from a secondhand engine? or a crate motor? or a reco block?
whatever block you use, unless its a brand new crate motor, get it thoroughly checked for internal corrosion, crack tested blah blah blah

mate spent a fortune on building a monster out of a "reco'd" 308 only to find the bottom dropped out of it 400kms into its life, the thing was ablsolute ratshit in the bottom end.

If you keep your coil packs (which should be fine) dont bother with top gun leads. They are a bit of a gimic, I wasted $60 on a 8mm set, then got a get of bosch super leads (long story why I did that) and they were just as good at $20 a set!

You said you were thinking of building a series 1 engine? isn't that the one with the pain-in-the-ass thermostat at the back of the inlet manifold? i would try and source a later model engine to build, just for that fact alone. but thats just me....

I don't know wether the s2 engine is any stronger and i was hoping to use the same EMS cause i have an sv chip which i have to speak to a tech about to see if it will do the job? But overall i don't know wether i'm better dropping a v8 in doing a v6 up or finding a S/C V6 theres so many choices. The only reason i was debating about that is insurance and rego costs. But whats the diff and Gearbox like in S1's are they strong enough to handle it or am i up for that as well???
As i said it's my first commodore and i'm not sure!!!

i know for a fact that the T5 manuals are a pretty strong unit. they use them in the states with some of the newer mustangs, albeit though with different gearsets. the borg warner diff should be good enough for what you want to do, unless you choose to go with a big power V8 then you could be reaching the limit a little there.

I would suggest an ACL race series rebuild kit for the engine with ACL race series pistons. Also get the bottom end balenced and blueprinted, also get your flywheel balenced to the crank.
If you want to go aftermarket EFI computer check out a Haltec E6xGM.

Personally I think your better investing in a 5L a conversion in your car would be pretty easy, although you would require another T5.

    cheers

I personally wouldn't bother with a V8 Conversion. With an ACL rebuild kit & pistons, Headwork, Cam and increase in compression you can get more power out of the six than a standard 5L without the weight and at less cost!

I did this to mine recently with crank ground .010, Custom grind cam, swirl port heads, polished inlet & TB, blueprinted bottom end (didn't bother balancing), the ACL kit & pistons and & chip by Dr Bob (which is fine - I don't think there is really a need for aftermarket EFI computers unless you are building a sports sedan or drag car)

what do u want the car to do, low 1/4 miles, show, or just sound nice down the street.
i personaly wouldn't go all out on a 6, but ive seen some prety fast v6's.
if you want a head turner, Id go for a 304 5l crate engine machined out to 350 decked out with yella terra heads fully port matched,
    stage 3-4 cam,
    full ACL race series internals.
    ballanced and blueprinted
COME twin throttle body intake manifold

HOPE YOU HAVE A GOOD JOB or know how to descretly rob a bank

You can get a lot farther with a kind word and a gun than a kind word alone

Did anyone what that saloon/production car racing on FOX sports last night? it was so cool, There was stocky VN's and EA 6's vs the old semi worked 253/Super 5 speed early commodores that was a big class of racing a few years ago vs VY Gen 3 SS's vs GTR Skylines vs BMW's all in the same race. It was the best racing I've seen for ages, especially when the VN V6 smoked the Gen 3 off the line untill 2nd gear:P!! but the gen 3 was powersliding onto the main straight and leaving the VN for dead, then the VN would pass him again throught the twisty parts of the track, this went on for laps and laps! in the end another gen 3 won but the VN V6 came 3rd I think and maybe the EA 6 4th, the 253 VC VB VH's were not far behind. Excellent stuff : ) gees that VN could give the VY gen 3 a working over though the corners you should have seen it, it was monstering the VY, seemed to have double the cornering speed

Fuel system is still standard - we're hoping to put it on the dyno and down the 1/4 as soon as it gets a few more K's on it. From initial feeling though it would probably be quicker from 0-100 than a 5.0L but after that the V8 would probably have the edge.
