    Question Power windows playing up

    Hi guys/gals

My power windows have been giveing my the sh*ts for awhile now.
Sometimes they go down and sometimes they dont, they have a mind of there own.
So far now they have been fine apart for the drivers window which dont go down at all.
When i press the button for it to go down all i can hear is a tick sound.
I tryed pulling the window down as i pressed the button but again... all you can hear is a tick sound.

Any idea what is going on here? Any info on this would be great.

    Thanks

It could be one of a few thinks really .Lets start with the motors, do all of them play up? or just one? Secondly your switches could be buggered, I think you can get a set for under 50 bucks from the wreckers, so probably worth buying a new set to see if it helps(normally you can take em back if it turns out you don't need them but ask first). Are your rear switches working fine? but only the ones in the console? if so them the console switches are most likely your problem. If all these are working try checking all the wires for voltage drop with a multi-meter (not that expensive or hard to use). A normaly battery should give 12.6v fully charged so you should get about the same at your battery then at your switches and motors. A bit of stuffing around if you cant be stuffed take it to a mechanic lol.

yeah, try using a test light first to see if the switches are working correctly. Sometimes the motors freeze up and require a bit of a knock to get going, and sometimes the BCM cause all the drama's. So yeah, i'd be looking into it a bit further before you go out and buy parts...

Ok thanks for the info guys.
markER717 sometimes the switches in the rear work and sometimes they dont. So all up they pretty much work when ever they want, and its realy starting to give me the sh!ts.
When i try and lower the drivers window i also noticed that as the motor ticks, my headlights, interior light ans so forth get duller. then i let go of the switch and they brighten back up again. Is this normal?

    Cheers

it could be your power windows module (or whatever its called). i think thats the black box under the steering wheel where the fuses are but im sure someone else could verify this. when my windows were playing up in my ss that was the problem.

My battery is fair old, could do with a new one. Would be about 4 years old now.
Do you think that could be the problem?
With old batterys ( like mine ) can you just charge them up so they last another year or is it best to buy a new one?

VNexecutive i saw that black box you were talking about. So thats the power window module is it?
Did you just buy another one or if thats the problem can you fix them?

its probably getting onto the end of its life, they only have about a 5 year life. New battery only costs around 120 for a basic one.

The box under your steering column (LHS, i'm sure you found it) usually has a hairline crack in the PCB, or the solder joints are loose. You can replace via parts stores (Genuine or aftermarket) or try your luck with one from the wreckers.
I replaced mine from one at the wreckers, cost me $15 and had a 3 mnth "warranty". Hasn't given me a single drama since, so I lucked up.

i'm not sure really, guess it's just age on the board and solder joints, bit of knock-about, mine was just shy of 400,000 k's though, and leading up to it's complete failure i occasionally had to give it a "love-tap" to get the windows to run...

The car i got the new module off had about 150,000 k's from memory.. Just make sure they're ok with you taking it back if it doesn't work, get a receipt...

    best of luck..

if u feel like opening the switches up and/or the box under the steering wheel u will notice the contacts are all copper - and the contact points will probably be shade of black... (from use/sparking when used) U could try cleaning the up as well.

Hey guys, im bringing this thread back to life as i have decided to stop bludging and get back to work on the VN.

The power windows have become a real pain. Kinda wish i never had the bloody things.

Was out in the shed sussing it all out. I got a new (second hand) power window module and it did no difference.

To sum up, drivers window does not go down at all, same as the left rear. But the front passenger goes down just fine. With the left rear window i can put it down from the switches i got next to me but i have to use the switch on the door to put it back up.

When i press the button to put the drivers window down all i can hear is a tick sound coming from the fuses under the steering column. I replaced every single fuse with brand new ones (even the ones that didn't need replacing).

    Any advice would be great.

One last thing, how do you know when a relay has blown?

    Cheers, Terry

mate door trims off and wire the bloody things straight to the battery if they operate then the problem is else where but it is likely that the motors are buggered (about 50 each from wrecker) and there is a thread on here somewhere about replacing them. Also spray a bit of silicon lube into the tracks that the windows run in as this can make a big differance if 1 seems slower then the others.
