what i've got right now is the system on the left, it's a setup i bought of vn luke from when his was a sc14'd v6
it's pacies with lengthened collectors that flange to two cats. the cats flange to a Y piece that's welded to the rest of the single 2.5"
i want to keep this setup mostly the same on my v8 conversion. at least long enough to get to the exhaust shop undefected. (not sure i'll keep the twin cats, but i might. might just go to a highflo cats.
because the advance headers i have to go on to the v8 just have the normal collectors, then a Y, i don't think they'll meet up with both cats so i'll probably just have the setup in the right picture to start with.
only thing is then there'll be nothing stopping exhaust gasses coming out the 2nd cat, instead of going down the pipe and out the back. i was thinking of just bolting a plate over there just to get to the exhaust shop without an epa for noise?
As long as the flange dosnt leak and it meats noise and pollution requiements then even though it looks crappy i cant see a reason to knock it back. You might get sideways eyeballed off the inspector but as said it should be legal. But maybe best to check with an exhaust shop or somone first maybe.
You won't have enough room to run two Y pipes. The cats may go very close to bolting up to the V8 extractors anyway.
hopefully it'll just bolt straight up, but the collecters and y piece on the v6 setup are custom bits, and comparing the v8 headers to them looked hugely different length.
Your idea has been pretty common in the prostreet common for a few years now. They are known as exhaust cutouts. There are three ways of doing it, one is to bolt a plate over the end of the dump pipe, the second is to have a mechanical (cable operated) butterfly in the dump pipe, and the third is to have an electrical (solenoid operated) butterfly in the dump pipe. In most places only the first option is legal, though.
you will be wanting more go from the 5ltr soon enough so you are better off getting it done to suit twin cats from the start, what you got pictured on the right would be fine for driving to the exhaust shop with but me being me i would just bolt the cats to the end of the extractors and drive to the exhaust shop like that, might be a bit loud but i would do it
