Tonight driving home in my VN (Series 2) V6 Auto, I heard a 'bang' from underneath the car, and the engine revved hard. Immediately after the car would not change up 1st to 2nd as normal, but had to be revved to around 3500 and then it would change after a few moments. It had a funny odour too, (and it wasn't me). I came home and read up and had a play with resetting the kickdown cable, but when I tried to reverse out of the driveway, no workey anymore. No idea if it (R) worked straight after the auto played up. Am I up for a new Auto Tranny?
please let me know if you solve this problem the same happened to my vns2 powered hilux i was flying up the highway (tis supercharged) and bang a puff of smoke and the gear changing and revving problem...since that day i have renewed the head gaskets (they were shot in two places and if you have either water in your oil ,brown oil,or losing water you may have done your head gaskets ,the smell you speak of could be burning water or burning oil (this is caused by the blown head gasket) any way i fixed mine wouldnt run right then found a perish vacuum hose this fixed the rough idle and gearshift probs since then i have replaced map sensor ,coolant sensor fuel rail ,fuel regulater ,fuel pump and filter ,coil pack spark plugs and leads and i still cant get the engine to run right i am considering selling my ute or going for a good old 253 and gas...let me know how you go
Had the same problem a few years back, I was hammering up a big hill and the auto hit neutral rather than a gear, revved like crazy, then it found the gear resulting in a massive bang through the drive line. Seemed to work ok after that, but would repeat the above every now and then. Turned out every plastic part inside my tranny was totally melted and I got a recon one for $1750.
