Default Spluttering / dying when engine is under load

    Hi fellas

Made the mistake of buying a vn, so here I am.. 1990 S1 N series auto 200 xxx kms

When im going uphill (the worst) or sometimes on the flat the car starts spluttering like its getting no fuel and eventually ends up dropping all revs to idle or sometimes cuts out completely and if i try to accelerate it make a kind of backfire noise... if i stop and leave it for 30 seconds and try to restart it's fine and continues to put along but a little worse etc etc .. happened 4 times on the way home from work yesterday (60ish/km)

I thought maybe the fuel pump was on the way out so i put a full tank and took her for a drive later that night ... i got about 10km before it died on me again and that was on the flat.

Tonight im going to replace the plugs and fuel filter, what else do you think i should look for?

I've noticed a strong fuel smell from outside the car after it happens if that helps.

It's an epic hassle atm so im trying to fix it asap. I think I've given you as much info as possible.

    Thanks to whoever helps

Ahh. Im very positive its your Fuel Injectors.

    But, just to be sure,

Check: Spark Plugs / Leads. Fuel Lines. Fuel Filter(s) Fuel Pump, these are your normal run arounds

Just got a Q tho, Does your Car Backfire wile Driving at all?

As for your Fuel Injectors, Try to throw some Fuel Injector cleaner in before you fill up, (Usually takes 2-3 times before it's noticeable)

If that Fails, you most likely have a Clogged Fuel Injector.

Sadly, it's to hard to say at the moment.. If you can give us more info etc etc Im sure we can help

    Good luck!

That is one of the breather hoses for the fuel tank. If any of these perish (usually after the 20 years since these cars were produced they start to perish), you get the fuel smell comming in the cabin and around the rear of the vehicle.

mate is it only doing it like of a night when you run the lights? or in the day to without lights on...cause if it is then i'd say alternator is on way out as lights would take power away from your spark. just a thought

99% sure that leads to the charcoal cannister, and is ment to be connected to the filler neck somewhere. do you smell fuel outside the car?

it either goes to half way up the filler neck (remove the metal plate in rear wheel well behind mud flap for access) or it will go to the top side of the fuel tank (undo the straps and lower the tank on a jack)

The CAS will die when it gets hot and some times some cold water will get them going again.

Running rough under load would probably be the coils or DFI unit under the coils. See if you can swap it with a mate.

To replace the CAS the balance has to come off - no easy job if you dont have big spanners Also must be lined up correctly when going back in or the balancer will eat it in 1 second.

i had very much the same trouble with my vs.. ex holden worker so i have very good knowledge how to fix em but this was a bitch.. that is your fuel line from the can to filler check the overflows on top of the tank (hard to see but lower one side of the tank u should be able to feel them) which cause fuel loss with out knowing.... what is causing your problem check your coil pack grab one from the wrecker (good to have a spare) should fix it

it wont happen if its cold... only once ive been driving for about 30 mins... but in saying that, it'll happen day or night, and sometimes i can get away with driving for an hour or two before it happens again
