Hi
I have a 89 Buick V6 with a auto and when I sit at the traffic lights in D and foot on brake with the engine warm there is a loud knocking noise coming from what I think is the gearbox. I have had a look at the harmonic balancer and the rubber is intact and dosent wobble when the engine is running. Is it a worn a torque converter? or something horribly wrong in the gearbox?
check the muffler is not banging on the panard rod.
Just checked and its not that. Its coming from the gearbox. When I sit at the lights I put in in neutral and the knocking is not as bad. Its when I have my brake on, in drive and the car is warm that the knock happens. Are torque converters known to do this after having a ruff live
check engine and gear box mounts

had same kinda problem, but when giving it a gut full sounded like i blew my bottem end bearings, $20 later had a friend look at it and find my flywheel had lost 3 bolts and was cracked lol
Real cars don't power the front wheels, they lift them
Cheers guys, I am gonna get my car over my mechanics pit in my garage :P and have a look at the bell housing and torque converter to fly wheel bolts. Ill let you know how I get on
It turned out to be the converter onto flexiplate bolts, cheers guys. I pulled my torque wrench out and found most bolts to be within specification so I just nipped them up a little more. There is still a slight knock however its no where near as bad as before, I think my flexiplate is pretty worn as the ring gear has been butchered by the starter so I am going to replace it.
