    Default T5 gearbox

    hey all

I just want to know how much power a T5 could take before it destroys itself. because i plan to stroke my 304 to a 355 estimate about 440 horse's with similar torque. think it could handle that??

You can destroy one with a stock 5 litre if you continually launch hard. 355 and they would be marginal. I'd be looking for a 6sp conversion.

As above, T56 conversion. Do it once, do it right.

    I blew 3 T5s with a stock 5L.

Exactly, do it once, do it right, TKO-600 without a doubt. T56's are over-rated.

You could build a T5 to handle it... just don't ask the cost.

If cars running 1000hp can't break them, they must be good

You could run 1000 hp in a gemini on the street with skinny tyres and not break a T5 :P, but also you could snap one in a stock V6 VQ on the track. Extreme example but the cars weight and the traction play a big part in driveline life. Near stock LS1's snap T56s and tailshafts and axels like they are going out of fashion on the track

I was talking about a track car.

Track cars.... we've broken 2 in the last 2 years behind a supercharged VY R8 track car. $12,000 later for a box that so far is going a lot stronger (from the US... bit cheaper then the $30,000 holinger conversion).

    There is a T5 running behind a 383 twin turbo pulling 1500hp.

The TKO box is a better option for the fact it's 20kg lighter and costs less to strengthen.

the word "butterbox" comes to mind.

be done with it stick a supra box in it... :P toyota W58's can be mounted up to a 304 (hydraulic clutch however) and don't cost too much. i looked at a T56 when i had my ss and the cost of a used box alone was hefty.

It all depends how good you are at driving stick, and how you plan to treat it. I thrash the living hell out of my T5, but I rev-match and go a bit easier 1st-2nd when I'm giving it cheek, and it looks after me.

On the other hand, if you plan to flat-shift and clutch-kick, I daresay you won't see more than a few months' use out of it if you're lucky

    Get a T56. T5s are useless.

Cant remember the exact cost, but it was a few years ago, so you'd be best emailing them to find an exact cost.

Its about 5 ot 6k for a t56 conversion… Was gonna do this a while ago and quoted it and worked out everything you need would add up to about $2500 minus the t56 and labor…

To break a T5 you would have to drive like a twat 24/7 imo.
Nah - the bearings on the lay shaft are really under specced. Clutch dumps and hard launches kill them very quickly. That said, if you drive smoothly and don't dump the clutch off the line every time they do last very well.

I reckon it would be worth it.. Better fuel eco (maybe the streets depending on gear ratio) and cause of the extra gear for it to rev lower down the highway. can smash it at the track all day long and it will still shift smoothly the next day etc.. Bit pricey tho but its a good investment
