Default How to adjust vn 5ltr timing

just wondering how you go about adjusting the engin timing, i checked the timiing when the engine was at op temp @ idle was 16deg advanced

was that with the aldl bridged or not? you are wasting your time if the aldl is not bridged. still sounds wrong anyway though. should be running less than 16 bridged, or more than 16 unbridged.

here are some instructions i have written before, cbf modifying them, you'll get the picture. if you want it factory, base timing is 10 degrees. you can run it on 14 though to give yourself a bit more power, providing you have stock chip.

to advance the timing on the dizzy, you'll need a timing light. bridge the ALDL connector to put it into diagnostic mode (there are tuts on this in the vn/vp section). check the timing first, see what it's running at the moment. base should be 10 degrees BTDC if no one has touched it. look at the timing marks under the water pump near the balancer, there are 2 tall lines and lots of shorter ones. it goes like this
14 12 10 8 6 4 2 0. 10 and 0 are the tall lines. there are more lines than this but this is all you'll need to look at. now, loosen the bolt at the bottom of the dizzy (dizzy is hidden at the back of the motor drivers side). twist the dizzy, and keep checking the timing to see where it's going. 14 degrees will give you decent power. once done, tighten up that bolt, and check timing again to make sure it hasn't moved.

didnt bridge the aldl basicly just grabbed a timing light and checked wat it was didn know i had to but i just want it at the stock 10deg

well whatever you do, don't set it to 10 degrees if you haven't put it into diagnostic mode. your car will run like shit and will have massive retarded timing (it should be running around about ~20 degrees in normal operation at idle).

check this thread to learn about the aldl. if you see the engine light flashing when you start the car then you know you've bridged the right wires.
