    Default VN/VP V6 3800 Timing Cover

    According to here VN S1 / VN S2 & VP V6 3800 Timing Cover's are different.

    Is this so?

I've rung around and everyone is having to 'look it up' alas to no avail. Not a lot is known about the VN S1 3800 parts/gaskets, etc.
    I've got a spare Timing cover of a S2....

Reason I'm asking, the timing cover has corroded around the coolant passages and the block (behind the water pump mount location) and I've a constant coolant leak, which has progressively gotten worse in the last few months.

They are different only a little but enough to stop you using a series 2 crank angle sensor on a series one. But it may also just be the different shrouds around the different cas's to.

The S1 and S2 timing covers are different as said above because of the CAS there are to different types, and if you are putting a S2 cover on with the S2 CAS it wont fit the S1 Harmonic balancer.

And you cant put a S1 CAS on the S2 timing cover, i went through 2 spare CAS to find out that they are different hights and cracks them, this would most likly be a timing thing for the S2 abit of a adjustment by a 1-2mm. easy thing to do is just get a S1 timing cover, i shimmed mine out with a S2 timing cover and used the S1 CAS but i dont recommend it.

Also another thing on the inside of the timing cover is different, the S1 has a plate type of thing for the cam spring to sit on and the s2 dont have this because they are slightly different cams.

Damn. I was thinking myself of swapping the S2 Harmonic Balancer, timing cover and CAS over to the S1 block.... but as you say the S2 cam gears are different.

Okay, kind of a no-hoper. Its not worth buying a new S1 timing cover, because these motors are now worth a couple of chikin-mcnuggets.

    Thanks guys.

I have a S2 timming cover on my 88 wagon. It was complete with oil pump. The mechanic said it was just the water pump had a shim plate in it and that was the only difference. Anyway I got the timming cover for $50 and it cost me $200 to have it fitted. No more coolant leak from that normal place

I'm not one to hypothesis, i'd pull the s*** apart but its my daily driver and I cant afford any downtime.

Thats why I gave it to a mechanic to do. He did not charge me for a CAS or balancer. The timming cover/oil pump I was told was from a S2. *shrugs*

The wreckers gave me a VP timing cover, and this is how i found out the difference, about the CAS waterpumps different. but yeah try your luck and see if it will fit, but pretty sure there would have to be some mods done. i did it to my old car but dont recommend doing it.
