Hey there,
Just bought another VN (yet to post pics of it).
Is great condition with crap loads of extras except the engine is another story. The engine is 270,000+km and the odo has stopped. There is a weird but fairly loud rattle when the engine is running and it runs with the speed of the engine. Like when the revs are high it will rattle or click will get faster with the engine. Another thing that has started to happen in the last 2 days is when i try to start it when its cold it lets out a loud hiss from the engine and just stops, usually followed by me not being able to start it for the next 20 seconds or so.
The previous owner says it was the engine lifters and before i go get it checked out i thought i might aswell post it here first.
When i find the problem im either going to fix it or just swap the engine from my brown VN.
What do you all think?!?
Thanks
James

The rattle could very well be the harmonic balancer, they sound like something inside wants to get out when they rattle.
The sound is vacuum through the intake, does it still turn over though? Could be a leaking injector.
Yes it still turns over but it does not start. When it happens i just turn the key off. Sounds bad![]()

Because the engine doesn't fire it is just intake noise. The engine will rotate backwards a touch and hiss through the intake.
This could be happening because there is too much fuel in the intake from a leaking injector.
i wont tolerate cretins aiming to cause problems here at jc and nor will i hesitate to let the moderators know

If its a rattling noise that increases with engine revs then Im certain its your timing chain. The small spring tensioner that keeps the chain tight has most likely broken off like it did in my VN. I doubt its the harmonic balancer, but a easy way to check it is to try turning it by hand. It should be IMPOSSIBLE to move it but if it moves at all - even the slightest bit - its stuffed. I'd also take the belt off to check this. Hope that helps
