Don't HAVE to take the engine out. If your mechanic has one of those "sneaky pete" tools, they can do it by dropping the trans.

Drop trans, flexplate off, wedge old seal out with a screwdriver and gently tap new one in. Pretty sure thats what my manual says anyway.

For series 2+ blocks yes, series 1 you need to remove the rear bearing cap and "repack" the seal, which requires sump removal yada yada yada big headache.

    But for series 2 onwards:

S1 is crap, engine out sump off rear main cap off, old Rope seal out and replace it, but rope seals are a pain in the arse, gotta use locktight inthere to stop it from twisting, i have done mine and i think it still has a slight leak that or the sump has a leak at the back. might aswell do all the bearings the mains and big ends if you are doing the rope seal. for a S1, S2 is piss easy.

I hope you go OK with the assistance. One more thing, the bolts for the flex plate to the crank have to be replaced (they are torque to yield). P#24501365, 18-22Nm + 70-75 degrees.

yes thats true but i bought new ones but the old ones were fine and the head of the bolt was thicker on the old ones so i used them again with some thread locker thats 60000 ago and no dramas
The neophrene seal has to go in a certain amount and not too far and squarely so you need to do some measurements to get it right
