Hey all,
Fitted a new clutch cable today and its AMAZING. You wouldnt be able to tell that its a cable setup even with a H/Duty clutch!
But the cable setup made me wonder, why did they use that big metal piece on the pedal box? And not just make the cable fit directly onto the pedal box? As this would stop the slight 'cluck' when you first touch the pedal.
But then I wondered again, is this how its ment to be?Just doesnt seem right. Can someone confirm this?

Your pedal should have a return spring on it, to keep the cable tight while not in use![]()

Yep there is that spring but it doesnt put a great deal of tension on the pedal. Maybe the pedal needs to be brought further by tightening the cable a tad more.
Yeah, there's specific tolerances that Holden recommend - and the pedal should be a certain distance from the floor of the car. I'll look it up if you want.

Nah thats alright. Have it somewhere. I once did it exactly to spec but found its now easier by feel and preference
As for that useless metal piece I might just wrap it in tape when the time comes to lube the cable to stop it banging around. Seems quite loose.

its not normally loose...are you sure the return spring isnt broken at the pedal

Hmmm cheers for that. The return spring isnt broken but according to that diagram it sits in a different position. I removed the clutch pedal when changing the cable (so much easier) and just put the spring back how it was. Maybe someone before me has put it on wrong. Looks like I have something to sus out.
Oh, and since installing the new cable Ive noticed the pedal vibrates, but stops when you apply light pressure. Im guessing this is normal and has something to do with the spring lol.
Something isnt right. Im trying to install the spring as per the diagram but there is no way the spring is going to bend that far. The diagram shows the spring coiled 3 times, which means I have to bend the spring more than 180 degrees. It wont bend more than 90 degrees! Perhaps they changed the design somewhere along the line? It was from a S1 after all. Anyway heres some pics to vent my frustrations.
How it should be.
How it was.
How far the spring needs to be bent, all the way around to the top!

just so long that it keeps tension on the cable it should be alright...I reckon the reason most break is because they have so much pressure on them...mine was broken and like you I couldnt see how it could fit without breaking again....I bent the new spring to suit and made it house againt another part of the pedal box...and it worked the same...when it was broken the giveaway was that I couldnt adjust the pedal height since it is totally dependant on the cable travel and when the spring it broken, the pedal just sits there no matter how you adjust the cable at the bell housing.

Well at the moment the spring does put some tension on the pedal. Enough to take up the slack anyway. It doesnt bother me apart from that big metal piece clunking which as I said some tape as insulation should fix that because it is a rather loose fit to begin with.
When the time comes to lube the cable I may sus out modifying the spring as you said. Cant be stuffed taking it all out again lol
just a quick one, should the clutch pedal be on the floor when there is no clutch cable connected to it? if not, does that mean that the spring is broken or the spring is ok?
cheers,
George
Yeah, the spring should force the pedal right back up to the floor when the cable isn't connected
If the pedal doesn't force itself back, then the spring needs to be replaced/refitted.

thats all good then...mine was to the floor
George
Dammit! Mine doesnt. This forums messes with your head!![]()
Hahahaha mate, your spring is probably on backwardDoes it spring UP without the cable connected?
Those things give me a headache. Took me a few tries to get mine right![]()

No its on the right way (to a certain extent), but only starts to push the pedal back when you lift the pedal past 1/2 way. With no cable connected it just flops around. As described in a previous post theres no way Im getting that spring in as the diagram shows lol. Might have to mod it as markovr did.
How'd you get yours in?
With great difficulty? I can't remember to be honestYou should go visit someone with a manual and compare pedals

I dont know anyone in my area, or actually anyone personally that has a manual VN-VS. Im all alone in this automatic wilderness haha.
Looks like Ill be tinkering with it yet again one day soon. *sigh*
Ive got the same problem with mine the pedal is loose as anything and the spring is definitely broken. Can the spring still be bought from holden?
