Hell no. Diff uses hypoid gear oil which is very thick. Manual trans uses manual gear oil or auto trans fluid if its a T5/T56 (some people use gear oil, its debatable).

FWD is a different story where it generally uses transaxle gear oil for both, but its designed to do so.

    they are but they arent
diff is thicker than g/b but most combinations now a days use 90 rating oil for both, and can be used if it is the right stuff to get you through the job, but if your buying brand new, buy the proper stuff

Differential: CASTROL LSX 90, CASTROL SAF-XA (lsd and competition use SAE 75W/140)<-i use that one
    man trans: CASTROL SYNTRANS 75W/85
