Hi, I have a 1990, VN SS 5.0Litre Auto, it has done over 300,000. the engine is great, the power is great, its just the cars body itself is not to impressive. I love the cars power and response, but I prefer the VR or VS model and shape and interior!
So my question is, how much money and work would it be to take the 304 out of the VN and drop it into a VR/VS which is/was a v6? use the same exhaust system and extractors also. and maybe the auto(if possible)
I just want to buy a real nice Berlina or Calais in mint condition and put my v8 into it, and that would make a great machine.
1. Would I loose any power ratio? response time? is there a weight difference or something?
2. would there be any major issues that I could face now or down the track with this conversion?
3. Any Insight into this job, great or small please assist, and be as straight as you can, my knowledge is not that great - so you may need to break it down a bit.
4. Would I need the ecu swapped with the vr/vs to match this engine since the vr/vs would be set tuned for v6 output? thanks
simply put i want my v8 engine and parts to be put into a VR/VS v6 car!!
Not sure where you are mate but best check on the legalities of doing this before forking out the reddies. It will no doubt need to be engineered to have it re-registered as a V8 and we all know that engineers have a very expensive Xmas fund to keep topped up?
Not trying to put a dampener on it, just trying to save you some heartache down the track. There is definitely no other sound to match a grumbling V8 though eh??? Good luck with your project my friend.
Cheers...............................Pete!

Hi, I know a few friends who have changed motors over and just taken them thru the Regency(SA) and passed the legal roadworthy issues and then registered, its a new engine thats it. all they need is vin number engine number nd put it in the system, do the roady check and then its done, as far as I know. unless anyone can add some light??
You can use either a VR or VS, you wont need not even one single extra part. Just move the driveline, wiring and front springs from the VN into the VR/S. You wont have any issues with anything, no need to have anything engineered, you just need the engien number updated. Yes it will be slower if you get a Calais VR/S compared to a VN SS but thats just how life is. It's hard to be comfy and fast at the same time
so your saying all i need is the driveline, wiring and front springs to change over when i put my v8 into the VR/VS, and why would it be slower, explain? do i get to keep my auto or use the one in the VR/VS? explain in more details
thanks for replies, I would like to know if anyone else also has input on what needs to be addressed when doing the 304 v8 from the VN into a VR/VS that is not a v8, I have been told the trannys in the 6, cannot handle the 304 v8, and that the tranny out of the vn wont work? can someone clarify. and roughly how much would this total job cost? any actual registered mechanics in here
Keep the auto and ECU and engine loom from the VN, job done. If you want a mechanic to do it, it will cost ALOT as in more than a couple of grand. But since it's a find and replace kind of job I don't think you need a mechanic
GreenFoam. Ive had a number of people tell me the VN auto is not compatible with the VR/VS being that its a different kind, the auto/diff from the VR is computerised where the vn isnt? I am really interested since I do not wish to lose my current engine and mods. but get a vr/vs and change-over.
the diff is not computerised. the auto is electronically controlled in VS (maybe VR too, i keep on forgetting). in the vn/vp it isn't. so just take everything from the vn (computer, loom, transmission etc), and swap it over. it still bolts up exactly the same...
That's ok it's just that a number of people had no brain. Just like levy said you can't put a 5 litre on a V6 gearbox, you can't put a VN box onto a VR/S ecu (well you can but we aren't going there) but if you put the VN engine and VN box and VN loom in, then what you have is a fully working.......... VN :!: ) (inside a VR/S)
