Thread: Pinging

  1. Default Pinging

luke and i were talking about pinging today, and i've never heard pinging before but i was pretty sure my motor didn't ping. i started it up today, and it made this noise i have NEVER heard before. the only thing i did different was that i switched it over to gas a bit quicker than i normally would (usually i let the engine warm up for longer before i run it on gas). so this video was made on gas. i'm pretty sure it wasn't doing it on petrol but i switched it off straight away after i made the video. is this pinging?

radiator also cracked a leak today, i'm assuming that wouldn't have anything to do with this though?

I don't think that is pinging, can you post up a video of it doing it when you rev it a little? Hold it at say, 2500-3000 and just take a sound recording as you stand next to the drivers door.

yeah i'll give it a crack tomorrow (can't do it now). if it's not pinging then it doesn't sound good... unless it's just a bad exhaust rattle

Sounds dodgy like and old tractor what timing are you running now? still your crazy 18 degrees base + whatever that tune has on it?). You can hear ping inside the car like tink tink tink tink, but you wont get a 304 to ping on gas I don't reckon not until it's running like a dog anyway

lol yes 18 degrees base but there's no advance on the chip at idle . so that's still only around 18 degres there, that's less than what it should be on! heeeeeeelp

You can only hear pinging generally when the engine is under load, for example when you are cruising and you accelerate, that's not pinging, maybe the gas was freezing up as they do and the engine was starving for gas seeing that you changed it over so quick.

^^ yeah that's what luke said. i don't even think the temp gauge had moved so yeah i'll keep my eye out on it but it was probably that or the gas is running too lean or something. doesn't seem too bad now

The only time my VN V8 has "Pinged" is full load of people in top grear up cement hill Brighton (SA) slipped it back to 3rd and no problem. My ping was more of a clatter ish ping and only did it for a second or 2. Soon as I got the revs up it stopped (I had lifted my foot too as soon as it started). I also run the cheap fuel too - so it's like running on gas.

It seems possible because if your radiator is stuffed it might be leaking and the converter is freezing up?

I remember when mine froze up on the old car, ran like crap lol

Also isn't it really hard to ping on gas? since it has such a high octane level etc?
(think gas is like 112ron or something)

bit of a dig here, but just in case anyone does any searching, the problem was my old exhaust rattling. put a new exhaust on the car a while ago and to my delight this terrible noise stopped
