I had the exact same problem as you, watch this vid is shows a great technique to splitting the joint.
YouTube - Honda painless ball joint removal

Basically jack the strut up and find a suitably sized socket to wedge between bottom of the strut and lower control arm then let the jack back down. Now there will be alot of pressure forcing the joint apart, and a hit with a hammer should release the joint. Worked like a charm for me.

i tooke the strut and lower arm out as one then proceeded to smash the joint with 2 hammers it came apart after a few swings.
you need both hammers to hit at the same time to pop it out.

i also find VN balljoints very difficult.
i broke 2 pickle forks and a 'special' ball joint puller.
cried to mechanic bud on phone.
he laughed at me and suggested that i htfu and hit harder with a bigger hammer.
over 30 minutes and over 100 hits - as hard as i could - yeah i counted.
metal on metal smell was like gunpowder/fireworks.
if it's about the backyard - keep hitting - you'll hit the right spot and pop it in in the end.
    enjoy.

the biggest hammer you can smash into it is the way to go.
i had a club hammer and large ball pein hammer.
took maybe 10 min a side, once they were on the ground.
