well considering im the first person to read this thread.. i surpose i should be the first person to say that both those ideas are illegal.. lol.. just thought id say it... now back to the topic... obviously welding it would be cheaper.. but not as high of quality... a spool shouldnt cost more then 200$$ i would think.. mabe cheaper .. cant remember... neways... the way i see it well obviously ur going to put it under a lot a pressure ie burnouts... so a spool would probably be the stronger way to go....but then again why do something half ass when u can do it full ass and weld it??

if ur a good welder just weld it up man, the welds will be stronger than the spider gears. mini spools are for people with no skills and too much money

If you are a decent welder, you'll break axles before you break the weld.

    Trust me
The very existance of flamethrowers proves that sometime, somewhere, someone said to themselves, 'You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to do it.

Go and drive a car with a spool or locked diff first. Sure it might be lots of fun to do brun out in but weight till you try and navigate a car park or do a U turn in the wet. I've driven my brother in laws xb hard top with a locked diff, sure it goes hard in straight line but as soon as you try and give it a bit of power in the wet you end up facing the wrong way.

thats because a driver who does that flat out has no respect for a spool, their car, or other road users.

my vn was a daily driver, and i worked in a city supermarket and i had to drive 20kms to get there, navigate heavy traffic, trams, pedestrians and finally park in a busy as hell, small inner city car park..

as long as you understand the implications of driving with a spool, and arent about to throw the back end out around every corner and arent gonna be stupid and try and turn a corner in second gear, there wont be a problem
(that doesnt involve a defect notice)

Then why exactly are they illegal? They dramatically effect the way a car handles and they shouldn't be used on the street.

your spot on with why they're illegal mate. they force a motor vehicle to behave in a manner that can lead to dangerous, uncontrolled and potentially fatal situations under the use of a bad/stupid/immature driver.

a 300kw LS1 monster is perfectly street legal in every aspect. but you put a stupid driver behind the wheel ..... see?

id rather drive next to a decent driver driving a spool equipped car
than drive next to a dick-head of a driver driving a perfectly RWC and legal car... period

and im not saying anything about age or experience ...

Fair enough and I do see your point. Admittedly the car I drove was heavily worked and alot more powerful than anyhting I'd ever driven before. Which is probably why I had such a hard time controllng it. But I still don't agree with using them on street cars.

Yeah how would your tyres go? LSD are bad enough but least when you do U-turns and that, the inside tyre isn't skipping.

spool and welding the diff are exactly the same except a spool cost money, if u can weld or know someone who can just give em a slab or something to weld it up nice. my cuz baught a spool for his old vq stato, it was awesome for burnouts, but he had irs and i ended up having to replace his rear k-frame twice due to tyre skip around corners, it puts too much load at once on the suspension when it jumps and lands. id imagine replacing rear trailing arms and/or bushes on a non-irs rear end quite often. and possible damage or bending to the panhard rod. forget about tyres, they disappear before your very eyes. just use stockies. a nice lsd setup is best but thats where the money is at my friend

Except in my case if it wasn't for the left hand guard my wheel would have gone rolling past me, concrete gutters and cars don't mix

i get 28 spline spools for $120 ... dunno why you'd spend hours upon hours of time welding then rewelding and welding again all these diffs that just keep blowing

you find me the commodore thats capable of shattering a solid lump of iron ..
