today i was driving and was entering onto the freeway, i was about half way along the exit, doijng about 100 at liowish revs, when the car just died. not loudly, just quietly stopped. i rolled to a stop on the side of the free way and then tried to start but it wouldnt crank over.
gave it a rest for 5 - 10 mins, tried again and started fine. drove 20 mins home, no problems.
the only ideas i have are:
fuel pump is faulty, fuel filter is clogged?
I checked coolant system and coolant is just clear and there looks to be like dirt or something solid sitting in the plastic tank.
I have no idea about the oil and oil filter and when it was last changed so i was thinking of doing that.
so my plan is to flush and refill coolant system. new engine oil and filter.
what else do you guys think it could be or reccomend i do to fix the problem?
cheers,
James
I think it will be your crank angle sensor. Theres heaps of info on diagnosing it on this site so im not going to type it out again. Just search CAS problems.

you dont need to type it out.
after reading about the crank angle sensor it sounds right, as the car has been driven mainly up to shop and back, has only done two longish (30 minute trips) and both have had trouble. once wouldnt start after i parked. other was today on road.
ill do a check a fault check and see what comes up?
Carry a cold bottle of water with you, and when it does it get out and tip the water over the CAS, and then try and start it. But it sounds like its the CAS.

- i did CAS a while back and fault code was "coolant temp sender error".
- ice blocks wedged behind CAS kept car running
- 1st replacement CAS was a dud and didn't fire
- had to beg holden for a replacement even when i worked there - carnts
- they unhappily replaced dud and gave me another
- all good after 2 new CAS's but i don't have a lot of faith in the fault codes
- still love the VN though
yarp CAS . . . .
alright ill do a fault check tomorrow, and see what i come up with.
ill start carrying a bottle of water just in case.
whats as replacement CAS worth?
i just had a quick look on ebay and the were only 40 or 50 dollars.
Dont get a second hand one, make sure you buy a brand new one, dont wanna do the job a couple times, because its one of the most common problems and they always do it one day.
