is there an easy way to removing the torsion bars that hold up the boot lid without screwing them?

There is a tool available; a big lever that hooks around the 'bar ends to aid in install/removal of the hinges. It wouldn't be worth buying for a one off but maybe you could make something similar?

You can try entwining a long screwdriver with the 'bar ends but that can endanger fingers and eyes if (when?) it slips.

I haven't done it for ages, but I think I did it with the boot closed, although obviously harder to get it out with the boot closed.

Use a pair if vice grips clamp them on to the end opposite the hinge pull the spring down then at the same time prise it out with a screwdriver ,make sure you hang on tight . Do it with the boot open and have someone hold it open so i doesn't smack you on the head when you pull the spring out . From memory the springs overlap each other in the centre and you need to do the outer one first .
