My VN temporarily died on me when I was driving home in peak hour traffic yesterday afternoon in the heat. I couldn't get it going again for 5 minutes but after that I could and I managed to get home fine. A similar situation occurred earlier this year and I took it to a mechanic to get it checked out but they found nothing and didn't charge me luckily. What do you guys reckon caused it? I had plenty of fuel but during the day I could smell petrol fumes in my car, is that normal? I'm pretty sure it is not leaking.
Thanks.
Nar, temp gauge was about half way.
Is it running rough at all?
Have you cleaned the injectors?
It might be worth checking the ECU, my VN had a similar problem a while back and it turned out that the Computer was on the way out.
My Vp used to do it and it turned out the factory emobliser was playing up
my vt stalled on me a month ago and i took it into the holden dealer and they said the throttle body was dirty so they cleaned it out and has been running smoothly ever since
Fuel smell would be a place to start could be tank not venting correctly and may force fuel up thru the carbon canister causing a over rich mixture stalling the engine . have you the correct fuel cap fitted and are the carbon canister lines hooked up correctly and the fuel tank vents working ok ????
I have no idea. I guess i'll have to take it to my mechanic and get him to look at it.
+1 for crank angle sensor. If it started OK once it cooled down a bit, that's a common symptom of CAS failing.

OK just did a codes check and I got 41 (crank angle sensor) and 13 (oxygen sensor), what now?
Replace the crank angle sensor...
You need to remove the harmonic balancer to get to it, so you'll need a puller to get it off. Can be a bitch to crack the bolt as well, so might be best off just taking it to a mechanic and let them replace it
The sensor itself is around $60 and then it will be maximum 1 - 2 hours labour charge.
Should I get one from the wreckers or elsewhere? Holden dealership? eBay? etc.
I wouldn't use a second hand one as its just as likely to fail within a few months. Best bet would be do get a genuine one from Holden, but apparently they are $100 now (according to another thread on here). Or you could get a non genuine one for $50 - $60 from a parts store.
OK thanks everyone.
OK Auto electrician quoted $180 for a new genuine CAS + installation. I'll be getting it replaced on Monday then hopefully i'll have peace of mind.
Woah, that seems a bit much??

yer thats a bit steap. ide go the non genuine one and chuck it in my self. piss easy job.
Well I ain't that good at cars so there's no way I could do it myself. How much should I be paying then? I hear non-genuine ones stuff up after a short period though?
Anyone trying to sell you a genuine one will tell you that![]()
