can any one tell me how hard it is to change rear main seal on vn 5lt ss commodore
im no mechanic but here goes.you have to undo the trans bolts pull the trans away from the motor as much as you can then carefuly remove old seal with flat screw driver put some ultra blue on the new one push it in so it goes in square.does that sound about right to anyone ?
That'd be correct for a post s2 V6 but the 5L has a rope type seal => drop the sump, pull the trans., front cover and drop the crank. An alternative is to drop the sump only and use a "Sneaky Pete" tool to pull the seal around in the groove in the block.
The question has been asked before so you should find some more with a search.
I'm doing the same thing and asking similar questions, check out
Rear main seal on 5.0 V8
If it's a rope seal (Most likely it is rope) then it requires the crank to be dropped down a bit to fit the top seal. You may get away with only removing the gearbox if it's a poly seal but you'll still have to drop the end bearing cap. I'm reliably informed that the injected 5.0 has rope seals up until the series 2 VP.
