Vp V6 Harmonic balancer making a metal clanging noise while running, took the fan belt off and tried to rotate it and it gets to a point and just stops moving......is this somethin that is easy enough to replace at home or do you need to get mechanic to do it?
cheers Dallascowboy
Its easy to remove at home if you have the right tool, i dont know what its called but it looks like a claw with a screw in the midle that grabs the harmonic balancer and pulls it off the crank shaft, i saw one st super cheap for around $75. After you replace the harmonic balancer either with a new one or one from a wrecker the bolt that secures it needs to be pretty damn tight, the book says something over 300Nm, but a rattle gun or long braker bar will do the trick. pretty easy and evern if you buy the tools it will probly work out cheaper than taking it to a mechanic.
i wouldn't get one from a wrecker. it might not last that long and cost almost as much as a new one spend the extra few dollars and get a new one.
Using a rattle gun won't guarantee removal of the centre nut (25mm from memory). You may need to use a long socket bar (with suitable size socket in place) get underneath the car put socket onto nut and end of bar against sub frame. Quickly turn the ignition on/off to cause engine to rotate (hopefully you have the bar on the correct side of the sub frameotherwise it can spin around and cause untold damage). Make sure that the engine can't fire. This method will always work with stubborn nut. Don't waste your time with a secondhand one. Take yours to auto parts store and get a change-over.
balancer replaced, problem solvered!
thanks for the help guys!
