    Smile LS1 fuel system

Cheapest way out of a fuel system to get an LS1 up and running? Won't skimp out on the pump, but I don't see the need for fanciness just for the sake of being fancy

What I'm after is ideas on how to go about the following setup

Surge tank (undercar or in boot, not sure of legalities but would prefer in boot)
Bosch 044 or Walbro GSL392 (this looks good WALBRO UNIVERSAL 255LPH INLINE FUEL PUMP GSL392 255 LPH : eBay Motors (item 220523160008 end time Feb-04-10 21:43:24 PST))
Fittings, hoses to run a return-less line up to the engine bay.

Do I use the standard LS1 FPR back near the external pump and just have it return to the top of the surge? That's something I'm unclear on.

    Any ideas appreciated.

We put an LS1 in my old mans HR. We used the existing fuel tank with a Mallory Comp Pump 110 as a lift pump into a 1 litre external surge tank then into a VL Turbo EFI pump. Then it goes to an adjustable external reg on the firewall which then has a return line back to the fuel tank. Is good enough for 240rwkw with plenty in reserve.

In your case, i would run a lift pump in the tank (VN 5 litre should do the job) then to an external surge tank then into the 044 (that depends what sort of power your looking for as the VL Turbo pump is quiet capable) then to an external reg in the engine bay. Put the return line back into the surge tank (this insures the surge is always full), then a line from the top of the surge tank back into the fuel tank.

I've attached a pic of the HR so you can see the reg, i can also take a pic of the fuel system in my ute because it's pretty much as i just said to do (apart from the 044).

Also attatched a pic of the surge tank used in both cars (and all the other EFI conversions we've done).

    Thanks for the pics

Lift pump: figure I don't need one, as the VS V6 intank one can move fuel up to the fuel rail which I'm sure is higher than the surge tank is going to be..

Regulator: I'd like to run a return-less system similar to the LS1 standard setup if it can be done easily.. meaning the regulator can be put way back near the surge (correct me if I'm wrong).

Power: I'm chasing around 300rwkw ultimately, that should be more than enough.

Surge tank lines: that's exactly as I expected (reassuring ) with the pump drawing from the bottom and the fuel feed, return and overflow lines all from the top.

Yeh, the existing fuel pump will do the job as a lift pump. We just found it easier to use a regulator up the front as the car already had all the fuel system in place from the previous engine (EFI 5 litre). However, there is no reason why you couldn't put that type of reg at the back of that car near the surge tank.

No, he's had the car for over 20 years with various engines in it. We pulled the EFI 5 litre out on a Friday night and had the LS1 back in on Monday morning ready to go have the exhaust done. No time for pics The only thing we bought for the conversion was a reverse sump (which i had to mod to suit the HR) and i made all the mounts and stuff like that. It already had a good Turbo 350 in it so we retained that. I also built (cut & shortened) the Borg Warner diff.

Any more questions, just ask. (mabye Via PM or in my ute thread if you like, save Savages Thread).

I see, I could end up with the reg up the front for two reasons...
    1. As you state, the lines go there anyway so it would be convenient.
    2. Fuel would have more piping to cool properly (not sure if this would matter)

However, ideally I'd love to run the regulator near the surge if heat wouldn't be an issue, as that would mean I could remove the unnecessary fuel lines to the bay and just keep 1, thereby neatening up the whole setup

What size pipe would you use? The Gen 3's have a bigger diameter fuel line/pipe.

on my vs ls1 ute im running standard intank pump to bosch 044 (no surge tank) into standard modified ls1 fuel rail with malpassi adjustable fuel reg.

works fine, cost = no much.

I've been looking to do this to my VS for a long time but $$$ is a problem at the moment and i'm trying to do some research before i step into it. Was wondering if you [TOPGEAR] had MSN at all? Just to ask some questions.

    Cheers Rod.

I've ended up settling on a returnless system for mine:

    In tank Walbro 255L/hr pump

SARD adjustable FPR near the tank, plumbed back into return line into tank

Factory metal line used up to the front, simple fuel hose to factory LS1 fuel rail
