Default VP Fuel pump on the way out

    Hi guys

I think my fuel pump is on the way out.

Are you meant to hear it whirr up when you turn the ignition on, or can you listen for it when you stop.

Just want to make sure its the fuel pump.

    cheers

    Dan

when you turn the ignition on the pump will come on for a short while and you will hear it, it will stop this is to put pressure into the fule rail and when the motor is running and has ol pressure contacts in the oil pressure switch maintain power to the fuel pump relay and you wil hear it while the engineis running.
If your wqorried about it remove the fuel pump relay and bridge the relay base sockets corresponding to the normally open connections on the relay and turn the ignition on but don't start it the pump will turn on nd should stay on. If you can't hear it you can then unplug the fuel pump at the tank and put a test light there to see if there is power. If there is power there's a good chance the pump is no good. Reconnect the pump and gently tap the tank (hard but not hard enough to dent it) and the pump may start if you have to do this then get a new pump before the car breaks down and needs a tow they were on special at Holden recently for $80. Use genuine or Delphi which is the OEM.

    thanks
yes beating the tank has started me a few times now, I just not 100% it is the pump yet (could have been coincidence), thanks I will bridge the relay and try a test lamp too.

    cheers

I think anything except the really cheap ones are ok. I bought a genuine one twice, the first one was an AC and the second one was a Delphi made in China. The first pump I took out of my VN which turned out to be OK as it was the CSA was a Carter brand made in the US and has a small mesh filter in it's input as well as the bigger one that pushes over the end that new ones come with.
The AC fuel pump lasted about 130,000km

well I wasn't going to go into it but the last one was a Bosch from repco $110.00..
Barely lasted 18 months, but I suspect I let it run dry a few times and this damaged the Bosch Pump.

    The GOSS cost $139.00

from super cheap auto, I just bought it because supercheap is walking distance and I figured aussie made was ok.
Repco had some brand for $110.00 thaT i HAD never heard of and they are an extra 2 km walk so I didnt bother.

    cheers

I always try to keep my tank over 1/2 full, the AC Delco pump lasted me about 9 years.
