Hey,
I have a 92 VP Calais and found a nice 308 for rather cheap, would it be worth ditching the V6 and replacing it with the 308?
What would be needed to complete the conversion?
Cheers
Yes it probably is worth it. I'd look for a complete car though as you will need the K frame, gearbox, engine loom, extractors, dash cluster and a heap of smaller stuff for the conversion.
Reaper
Yea, i can easily source the gbox and extactors ect, just need to find k frame and dash cluster. will it bolt straight in? (to some degree) and will it need certs
Meaning it would be impossible to plant a 308 in my vp?
nope not impossible just not worth it you have to put all the pollution gear on it and has to have the same carbon output as the car came out with... i am sure this is the requirements. and have mod plate for all the work.. good luck with it lots of ppl do it just dont tell onyone and keep it quite
i have been told by an engineer you cant put a say 1983 blue 308 block into a car that rolled out of the factory after that date even with polution gear it wont pass roadworthy and if you get done driving it you could be in alot of trouble i was spewing i have a red 308 with all the goodies sitting here but cant put it into my vh
Are the same laws applied in nz?
dooo it!!! will be awsom
It'll pass if you prove/show the blocks are the same and don't change the pollution output and then have the blue motor pollution gear on it. So long as you don't increase the smog it puts out then it's all good.
Also so long as the engine falls withing the same or better Australian design rule you are ok. A27a, 27b, 27c, 37/00 etc. It doesn't have to be the same year, 37/00 for example ran from 1986? till 1997.
But for the original poster, you will at the very least need the entire VN top end and injection on that
Dam that sucks haha, wanted to rebuild the 308 without having any of the old motor. Might have to find another donor 8 then. any sugestions of a easy fit? and lots of power. i was going to rebuild the 308 strengthing from the bottom up and throwing two huge turbos on it, nothing like an old school sound with new school tech
<Miss Jane>What is it
<Squiggle> It's a VP with a carby 308
<Miss Jane>Will it pass emmisions?
<Squiggle>Oh Miss Jane it wasn't finished
<Squggile>*Squiggling*
<Miss Jane>What are you doing now?
<Squiggle>I'm finished Miss Jane, it's upside down!
<Miss Jane>*Turns picture*
<Squiggle>Look Miss Jane it's a HQ with a 308 and twin turbos!
<Miss jane>Will it pass emissions?
<Squiggle>Yes!, time to go Miss Jane! (get's in Rocket) pSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHCCCCCCCC CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC
Well the point of the upside down, is that it's easier and better to change the car to suit the engine
Yea, might look into the 304 now. oh well the 308 will make one interesting go kart!
If you in Nz mate.. chuck the 308 in providing you'r mounts/brakes etc are up to scratch and the vehical is up to WoF standard.. take it for low volume cert...
Floor it and swerve driving skool
I think people are confusing some facts (Australia anyway)
The law regarding motor changes is quite clear, if your swapping motors, and use a motor that the vehicle came with from the factory (putting a EFI 304 into a VN V6) is completely legal and doesn't require any certification, other than a check that the motor isn't stolen (plus brake upgrade).
When it comes to fitting motors NOT released in that model, this is where the engineers report comes into it (such as getting a VL legally registered with say an RB20). This is why most people (in the op's case) would just find a 304 and fit that, plus i don't know why you'd want a carby V8, over an EFI V8.
