Default Vn running bad when low on petrol

    Hey guys.
A friend said its the Surge Pump causing this, but he doesnt own a VN so I just wanted a second opinion.
When my VN has less than half a tank of petrol it begins to run rough, and even sometimes stall when i sit at the lights for 30+ seconds...
When fuel is full runs like a dream.
I'm getting her serviced and 'tuned' this Thursday. Which may help as it runs a little rough anyway. But its considerably a lot worse when petrol is low.
Also after I've been on a long drive (and petrol is low) once I park, and turn her off. There is a. long stretched out...squeal?...Squeal doesnt describe it very well, but its a high pitched whine coming from near my fuel tank at the back of the car...this goes on for about 10 seconds...

Any suggestions on what it may be?
    Thanks guys

If your getting it serviced, get them to check the fuel pressure, a whine or sqeal sounds to me like it might be the fuel pump.

You know these in tank pumps you are not meant to run dry because they will not be cooled properly.

Mine did the same thing but without the whine or sqeal ..I think you will find that the half tank of petrol doesnt have a lot to do with it and eventually it will conk out even with a full tank, just a matter of time.

Mine took about 6 days to die completely from the first time it conked out spluttered out.

I might be wrong, but beware if I am right some mechanics will charge a shitload for the job because it is an intank pump and the pump has to be drained ect ect..

Its an easy DIY if you put the back wheels on stands and drain it yourself one morning.

    Cheers

I'd change the fuel pump quick smart. When I had my VN it gave no warning other than that day it took a while to start and idled badly, the next time I went to start it, nothing and no amount of tapping the tank etc could get it to go and it had to be towed home.
It's an easy fix just jack up the car, best to have it raised level letting the back diff hang free ie support the body as it gives better clearance to get the pump and filter out. I'd also use a genuine part and get a new fuel filter and hoses. Much easier and less messy if you syphon the tank first.
