ok i have a vp spac and have read about gutting cats. ok b4 u guys go crazy tellin me its illegal i just want to ask some questions
how hard is it to do?
will it make my stock exhaust sound any betta or pretty much the same?
will it show an error on my computer in my car or whatever i have read about.
and will it be obvious if i get pulled over my cat has been guttered.
after all of those questions i just want to let u know that if it doesnt harm my car and doesnt leave me instant cop bait i am considering gettin a cat from a wreckers and gutting it and fitting that so i dnt harm my original so i can put that back in if anythin happens
any help would be sweet cheers![]()
ohhhh no.. dude prepare to get raped.
plus the fine is like, 8-10 grand isnt it?
BUM BOWWWWWWW.
no comment
i knew there was a fine but how do the coppas find out does it make it louder
Just weld it straight through man. Yes you will get a noticeable amount of noise and alot more flow. Another option is just to get a 13mm drill bit and drill straight through, probably the easiest provided you can get a bit long enough. Unless your running FI or have a V8 its probably not really worth it (although drilling should be fine). Id either go no cat or 2 hi flows if your running a fair bit of HP. Very very unlikely cops will pick you up for a gutted or catless system. On most systems you will get a bit more 'crackle' at high RPM. No it wont stuff your sensors around unless your have a pre AND post 02 sensor, but im pretty sure even on your model there all pre cat.
For a safer option, id just run with the hi-flow 3" deal.

they can test the exhaust fumes or something.
seriously, if i were u, dont even bother. its sooo not worth it.
yea prob not worth it just save up a bit 4 an exhaust system think that would prob be cheaper than an 8 grand fine lol.
but still interested in seeing what it would sound like but dnt wanna risk it
just get a proper exhaust done, you wont shit ur self every time you see the cops and it will 9 times out of 10 perform and sound better![]()
The cops/epa measure gas concentrates in the exhaust fumes to determine how effective your emissions control system (cat for the most part) is. If you don't have a cat or a gutted cat they'll know the second they test. Last I heard max fine was $10K and its and in this day and age the EPA are more than happy to hand out the max fine for emission violations. Obviously if there is no cat they'll know from a brief visual inspection.
That said, police are highly unlikely to test your emissions unless you've done something stupid to piss them off, in which case they'll go over the car with a fine tooth comb to find anything and everything that they can defect you for.

You heard that crackle from a wrx? Its similar to that. The majority of rexie zorst setups go catless so they get that crackle. Ive spoke to a couple of zorst centres after noticing the same thing with about 6 boxer engines. Just improves that unique boxer sound. Personally man, go pacemaker headers, twin hi-flows and twin 2 1/4" system. Youll be impressed, and very legal too. (enough to keep the cops happy anyway)

so its prob not worth it ayy. whats a good price 4 a fitted exhaust system without extractors
ok yea thats fe how hard i it to fit extractors. sorry bout all the questions guys but just gotta ask
No - Grab a small piece of pipe or a broom stick and it takes about 2 min if that
Sounds crap actually.will it make my stock exhaust sound any betta or pretty much the same?
AFAIK no however I could stand corrected on this one.will it show an error on my computer in my car or whatever i have read about.
Yes - your car will sound crap and expect a trip to the epa with an expensive fine attached to it.and will it be obvious if i get pulled over my cat has been guttered.
Suit up fool - your in for a flamingafter all of those questions i just want to let u know that if it doesnt harm my car and doesnt leave me instant cop bait i am considering gettin a cat from a wreckers and gutting it and fitting that so i dnt harm my original so i can put that back in if anythin happens

Haha i love some of the responses in this thread. Anyone would think some of you are on the EPA payroll.

How much can we get for the scrap metal in a CAT in Australia?. Is it like the ghetto in the USA where they steal them from parked cars to cash-in at a Scrap Yard to by a couple of ciggies?
i doubt you'd get much

It will sound crap, and be prepared to face a defect for one, and a fine in the thousands from the EPA, if you see the purple lights in the mirror, you will be in for a fine that is most likely worth more then your car.
I have fitted a Hollowd out Cat before, sounds Tinny and shit, there is no higher flow that is crap and definat loss in power in the mid to high rev range. to bad i havnt put it back to back on the Gtech it would be a good idea i have a spare one here.
~ VN POWER ~ Click the scales
In a FI setup i seen a slight increase in torque and a 9rwkw difference compared to a hi-flow cat. We tested with a twin cat connecting pipe and for personal interest i tried a catless piece whipped up from 51mm pipe. We decided to put the hi-flow cats back on as it was just too risky. 9rwkw on average? I dont see a loss in power. I could see how it would be a loss in power on a N/A engine though, considering i was running 13lb at the time. Personally i wouldn't run catless on any system, regardless of the gain in power over hi-flow cats, but this only goes for F/I Systems. Catless on a NA engine would have no were near enough compression for the system to run properly.
Also, with the straight through peice, it was just louder, didnt sound tinny at all. Keep in mind the steel was 3.6mm thick, which would make a different sound.
Azza
well i think it would be a better idea to gut the cat and put a straight pipe through it instead of just gutting it and putting it back. apparently that's worse for performance, whether it bounces the waves back or something i don't know. but the stock cat flows enough for stock v6 anyway
and to the op, run the car and sniff your exhaust. then unbolt it before the cat and sniff it again. it is obvious![]()
