    Does it go any higher?

You might need a new Thermostat ..And a radiator flush out.
And you will need to bleed the system from all the air..As air can cause the needle to go up

There is a problem there, most probably poor coolant cirulation, maybe a blockage, faulty pump, leaks, clogged radiator, thermo (as stated above..good point), but if it heats up at the lights it means the engine is just relying on the incoming air to cool it, it should really be cooling itself even if it has stopped.

Cooling issue, time to do some trouble shooting.

and yes it should not really get to that temp under normal around town driving, it is close to overheating.

    Cheers

Dose the thermo fan come on? Should be around half way up the gauge when it comes on.

But i had a similar problem way back when i first got my car, the thermostat was stuck open tho not, not closed, allowing the engine to heat up. You could have the opposite problem.

the fan does come on but ive only noticed it when the gauge gets to tha mark and the temp wont go back down to near cool untill i drive like on the highway it will go down a lil but not much also have noticed a water leak i think near the water pump but down the side of the timing cover if that makes any sence?

when was the last time it was flushed?
think it cost about $100.00 to get it flushed.
Also check your hoses, the thermo hose at the front of the engine often leaks or the water pump hose or the radiator hose just near the water pump hose.

get a manual too... to run some checks on this stuff or take it to get flushed and they will replace the thermo and hoses if needed at a cost.

First things you have to determine is- "is the coolant circulating the engine properly".

Turn on your air con too and listen if the fan starts up, also listen if it starts up when the engine starts to rise in temp (it should), (If the fan is stuffed check/replace the relay and or get one from the wreckers, a fan that is)

    cheers

thanks vp commo for some good advice i only have one prob with doing it is that when i push the air con button and have the interior fan on the a/c wont engage its got a rather new compressor in it and ive tested for gas which seems to be in there...ive checked all the fuses and relays but cant seem to get it to engage also i rebuilt the switch and still nothing...but in relation to the temp the car performe awesome today in the heat dint go very high in temp and soon as i started to drive again the temp went down and the fan engages at half way exact.
