    Default battery voltage issue

    Hi all.

I noticed when my VQ is stationary, and my indicators are flashing, my dash dims slightly.

So i ran the special trip computer funcitons, and checked voltage.
At idle it drops down to around 11.7 volts.

Then when i start driving it wont go higher then 13v.

    Is this normal?

13 V is not too bad, but it should usually be around 14V on idle.

Could be your alternator or your battery, usually you can get your battery checked at a battery place for free, but it does sound like the alternator.

    Cheers

Check the alternator under load and see how much voltage it gives out.
Also check if there is a voltage drop from the alternator thick power wire to the battery positive.
There should be no voltage drop.
check all connection at the battery make sure there not loose.
Or it could be the alternator it self.

I must say the battery looks rather old and worn.

Ill have to get a multimeter on the battery @ idle. The alternator looks reasonably new? well its looks clean...

I think it could be the battery. Ive never heard of the brand its got - its some wierd brand plus it just looks like its been in there for a while.

    Thanks guys.

I dont think it will the battery. But worth a try.
The thick power wire that runs from the alternator to the battery never get changed
when putting in a new alternator in.
I have done a few cars that were old that needed a new power wire put in because of the voltage drop.
I would check it with a multimeter.

Simple, run those diagnostics like that guy said.. and get your battery load tested, they can do it on the spot.

Looks do not mean a lot, its what is inside the battery or alternator that counts.

Update with this - issue seemed to of fixed itself.

    Idle V is now 13.5-14V

With lights ~12.5-12.9V Driving is good over 13.5
