They are all basically the same. VN-R are rated at 165kw (at the engine) and VS 168kw (i think the only change was a knock sensor and revised CAI)

Yes they were all 304s. The 5L changed from 308 to 304 midway through the VK range (somewhere in 85)(VK and VL remaining carby, VN onwards EFI) and went right up to the VT Series 1 (not including the stroker motors obviously)

The auto gearboxes are different (VN/P the same, VR different) but everything else is the same.

Yep everything is exactly the same engine wise apart from the VN's having slight better headers (debatable but probably true), oh and starting on the VS or late VR's the oil cap is yellow

If were talking little things, the Holden symbol on VS engine covers is the 'round' lion

The motor is identical. Its only a CAI/Tune/Exhaust that gives it that rating.
Also, its either have an SV90, or its an enhanced VQ Statesman or Caprice

    More small details...

VS V8 Series I was rated at 165kW, the Series 2 was rated at 168kW due to an 'Over Radiator' cold air intake and reshaped top lid airbox.

The later VS Series 3 (Utes and Statesmans), which was the same as the VT motor had the roller lifters and a higher compression ratio through revised heads.
