hi, guys, my 4 years old battery just died on me.the battery light comes first, it comes and goes for a while and out of the sudden, gone. got a new one, century, for 150 bucks. put it on, same things happens, the battery light comes out and after I drove for 20 km, it disapear. the next day, the same. I thought it was the battery, but after changed to another one, still the same. could it be the alternator?the guy from supercheap recon it is the ECU.thanks.
battery lights is the alternator warning light. it means the alternator is not charging.
need to check with a voltmeter to confirm.
alternator for sure
If its got Wheels or Boobs its gonna cost ya money
You old battery is probably still ok, the regulator on the alternator might have just run out of brushes
lol your first mistake was taking advise from someone who works at supercheap haha
just buy a sencond hand alternator if you dont wanna spend much, ebay or something like that
hey mate had same kind of thing happen to me, changed the battery and alternater and still had battery light poping up every so often, never did find the problem eaither
Real cars don't power the front wheels, they lift them
the alternator could have also helped kill the old battery by running it too low.
you car battery is not deep cycle, so they dont like getting too flat.
Dan
just get a new reg for the alternator. About 25 bucks I paid. lol ECU, what a n00b. I never buy from supercheap, rip off dumb a$$es imo.
Supercheap hahah.
No.
Have a look in here for some references:
Replaced alternator in VP 5 litre but battery light still on
if you are still having probs get a test light and check for power on the main power cable at the alternator. then unplug the reg and test the 2 pins in the plug, one should have a constant power and the other one when probed should bring up the battery light on your dash. if you have got all these then there is something wrong with the alternator. cheapest option would be to try a new regulator which might fix it, if that doesnt work your other options would be either get a used alternator from a wrecker but thats prob not the best idea, or you can either get an exchange alternator from an auto electrician or get a brand new one.
i had the same problem with mine just get a different altinator and just swap it over, i had the same problem not that long ago 4 batterys 3 altinators later its working fine then all my other problems started lol, if ya going to dump the car at lest get insurance first and torch it lol
Check the voltage at the battery when the battery light comes on. You should be getting between 13-14v
If not then get you alternator changed its not always the REG when the alternator goes
it could be the rectifier as well. So get i new one or reconditioned one.
any one? if just few hours, I need to dump the car before it stop in the traffic. thanks.
mate step one dont listen to anything supercheap got to say.. all they kno is what they read of the packet. second its ur alternator.. also chek the power cable leaving ur alternator going to ur battery.. sumtimes they can burn out, cuasing a voltage drop.
Just get a new regulator for the alternator 95% thats the problem, they wear out like anything and need replacing once in a while
The regulator for the alternator has carbon brushes in it that run on the alternator commutator ring, the carbon brushes wear down until the contact becomes sporadic and your charging becomes too
dodgy = battery light on dash lights up. The regulator is usually held in with just 2 screws, It is possible to replace just the carbon brushes but that's not a job I'd try myself. My regulator cost $50, maybe try ebay or look on the for sale forums here. Your old battery is probably dead from excessive discharge, if you can't get the regulator sorted ASAP then put a battery charger on each night and try not to drive at night or you'll be buying another battery.

Check the tan wire is in good condition that runs from the reg to the positive on the battery.
I swapped my regulator in the Repco car park where I bought the new one, 2 min job.
Disconnect the battery and take the belt off the idler pulley. Undo the driver side alternator bolt and loosen the passenger side bolt a little (10mm and 13mm i think? Can never remember bolt sizes...). Disconnect the alternator and roll it upwards. Remove the regulator from the back of the alternator and install the new one. Two screws off memory. Lower the alternator back into position, reconnect it, tighten bolts, fit belt back on and reconnect battery. Problem solved.
