Is it an 8 or 6. Don't touch the cat unless your in NZ. Won't give much of a gain and will sound horribly tinny. Take of the rear resonator for pure noise. If not_an_abba_fan is lurking I am sure he will give you a better opinion.

It's a VN. What you want to do before fudging with the exhaust is take a good long look at yourself. If you're under the age of twenty or are still on your P's wait until you're older and have more of an appreciation of money and cars before jumping on the zorst bandwagon. More or less you aren't going to impress anyone with huge exhaust and gutted cats and cannons (and if you do i think that says something about the people with whom you are associated). 125kW is all your ever going to get out of the 'ol VN unless you do some serious work to the internals of the engine. Refer to my post in your "punching cats" thread.

Aye, that age thing is totally irrelevant.

I'm 17 now. I bought the car, with my OWN money at 15 for driving on my Ls. Put in the WHOLE exhaust with my own money.

But that doesn't mean I have no appreciation for money. If not, I've got more. I've had to earn the money for putting everything in.

Then you are unique and an exception to the rule. My post was aimed more at the young and naive and as you are clearly not naive this post does not refer to you and you can go on your merry way. The amount of "how do i get more power out of my VN for cheap, will painting the bumper bar and punching cats get me more killerwasps" threads that pop up here is annoying. Sticky time?

I think I've seen 3 in as many days, actually.

They don't understand that they're there for a reason. You can find that VERY minimal gain somewhere else, pretty easy.

Well, I've got it SLIGHTLY easier, dad said he's happy to pay for the insurance and rego up until I turn 18. After that, I'm on my own.

But repairs, extra's, and petrol all come out of my pocket.

gutting the cat will give you as much power gain as pulling the air con out and using wind up windows instead of electrical and pulling out the back seat lol, just not worth doing it. but i suppose people are willing to try. bloody silly cants. ah well

Removing the aircon will probably give you a much better gain.

If you remove the WHOLE lot, I think Morton said it was something like 20kgs at very minimum.

That's a very handy weight loss.

There is a far bigger gain to be had from removing the air-con (or at least running a non-a/c belt) as oppossed to 'punching out' a catylic converter. (though it is still not a great amount seeing as the a/c has a clutch)

The hollow cat brigade all need to be shot.

Thread bump.. not trying to high jack just a legitamate question..

I have to basicly redo the exhaust on my VN...as the rear half was ... well putting it bluntly F....KD after being butcherd by previous no brainer owner before me...was seemed like a easy simple fix to me has ended in a major...

Question is..from the Y pipe in the front its 2 flanged sections...then to the main belly muffler.. the rear muffler and over diff pipe sections all ****ed...

Is any gains to be had by using a free flow muffler and 2 1/2 inch pipe or stick with 2 1/4inch??? The noise isnt too bad just a anoying drone,,abit on the loudish side..
Floor it and swerve driving skool

2 1/4" is the best size, but there isn't anyone that does an off the shelf 2 1/4" sports system. Over here you can get the tail pipe section in 2 1/4" without the resonator, don't know about there. I would chop the front muffler out and weld in a straight through muffler and use the tail pipe only rear.

    So a 2.5" loses power?

I thought anything after the tune length extractors doesn't make a difference anyway, aslong as anything after the extractors isn't creating a huge resistance.

It's all about how fast you can move the exhaust, not how much. The bigger the exhaust, the slower it actually moves as each pulse has to take up more room.

Even extractors aren't designed for optimum exhaust velocity, they are getting better with merge collectors, and as technology gets better, the designs will also improve.
