I rebuilt mine last year and it cost nearly $3000 for the rebuild, over $2000 for the reconditioning, pistons, bearings, lifters al that jazz and a few hundered for all the little bits like sensors and bits and pieces. better off just geting one with low km and swaping over not worth doing what i did.

Camshaft yes. Rockers are easy with engine in car.

I'd check the timing chain and tensioner and replace if necessary. The tensioners have a bad habit of ending up in the sump and a loose chain will cause a very annoying rattle.

Timing chain kits and tensioners are cheap enough just bear in mind there are two types of tensioners, ones with a short bolt and ones with a long bolt.

If you have the spare cash why not put on a powerbond balancer, they look MUCH better than the standard balancer and are apparently much more durable.

If your handy with a Dremel you could give the heads a very mild port and polish. Just get the intake and exhaust manifold ports all lined up perfectly so theres nothing to disrupt the air flow and polish the chambers. Practice on the old heads first if your not confident.

Other than that I'd be giving it a good clean out. Make sure there aren't any nasty deposits in the sump or in the oil pick up. Theres only so much you can do internally before you start heading the way of a rebuild. For high ratio roller rockers might be worthwhile putting in some harder springs.

    Thats my 2 cents anyway

Not sure on the cost of a Dremel, check out eBay.

You'll need to replace the tensioner with the same type. If it uses a long bolt type it'll need to be replaced with a long bolt type.

When I did mine I gave Holden a call to see if they could tell me what type my engine used before I pulled it apart, they answer they gave me was basically "There was no set group of engines that used the short or long, it was basically random. You'll need to pull the engine apart to see which one you're using." So I just guessed short and got it wrong.

Just go to ripco and get yourself a crow timing chain kit and the tensioner. Repco were about half the price of holden for the tensioner.

if it runs fine then you don't need to waste your money on a rebuild or new engine

diff gears and lsd are not in the engine so it doesn't make a difference. you said you know nothing about cars, cam is a big job so you'll need to do a lot of reading first

i kno but doesnt 320000kms running gas (gettin removed at the end of this year, & only been in for 9 months) it gets serviced reguraly but im in the progress on wnating to keep thios beauty for a while already spent 4k on body work and interior.. now i want it to be a sweet v6 with power and sound.. do you reccomend me gettin a newer engine or keep it :P

there's an old saying, and you already know what it is so i won't say it here. you could buy an engine with lower kms that has 5 billion problems.

if you want sweet power and sound, you'll never get that out of a v6. ever. you'll want to go the 5ltr route, a foam tuned 5ltr which will cost you $1000-$1500 to get in your car and it will go faster than a $7000 v6 (true story). too many people have gone down the v6 route and come out disappointed

doesnt that mean i need to buy new parts to fit the 5lt 8 in then also get it registered as an 8 at regency???
or is it ok cause berlinas came out as an aswell??
and if i did need to buy new parts what would u reccomend i get for the 5ltr lol
sorry about all these questions just need to do some research before hitting the engine

kno anyone selling a 5ltr v8 for a vn berlina

  17. Default

there's heaps of threads about this, search them up

    V6 to V8 conversion

you'd need to get it registered as an 8 but that's not hard. you don't need to get it engineered or anything.

If it is running fine, I'd just keep driving it till it isn't and visit your friendly wrecker with a couple of hundred when that happens.
