OK......since owning my VN CALAIS 88, I have noticed some perculiar things going on to which I asked my local holden dealer about, to no avail. They wont even look at my baby in this town...(damn country towns, rather deal with male farmers)
Anywayz...I have been having a couple of problems with her:
1st problem is she has been stalling for no reason (only a couple of times so far) whilst slowing down or cruising at low speeds. When stalled, the engine light had came on but the car starts up right away with no problems.........
2nd problem that has just started is she surges whilst driving and just recently the cruise control has been surging with the speedo needle flicking up and down. (no engine light shows up) but the car stopped surging when I disengaged the cruise control?????!!!!!!! 3;
3rd problem is the idling semms a little rough, although I have changed all leads, air filter, sparkies, oil and fuel pump...which reminds me, the fuel tank reader thingy was replaced prior to purchasing the car and now the fuel guage on the dash is reading 1/4 tank but the tank is empty.
...apparently it was put in wrong.
COULD THIS BE THE PROBLEM FOR THE ABOVE???
Apparently the car has had an overhauled engine 130,000 kms ago. Overall I have 247,000 km on the clock.
Any help would be appreciated
Ok I have just been thru the same problems with my sis vn with it cutting out an what not I have taken it to a auto elec
First they said fuel pump and or fuel filters (wasn’t that)
Then they said coil pack (wasn’t that)
Then it was the crank angle sensor (wasn’t that)
Then it was the immobiliser and that fixed it so far touch wood
I’m not saying its you immobiliser more than likely you don’t have one
But her car was doing exactly the same stalling while cruising, running rough and I had forgotten to mesion to the auto elec it had a immobiliser so that was the list of things he gave me that would cause the car to do those things if were buggered
THANKS.......I actually was in town one day and coming out from a shop, anyway, this woman used her alarm deactivator on her car and drove off....when I opened the car my alarm went off!!! I have never used it or set the alarm (as I dont have the activator) thats when I found out it had an immobilisor...geesh talk about inconvenient.
So after a visit from the RAA, who couldnt help, we waited around fer over an hour and thought...what the heck, lets try to start the car....and BINGO, off she went, must have reset as we had the key, and drove off. Never had a problem since BUT i have noticed that my car has been running weird ever since.
Would that have anything to do with it? And how do you stop the immobilisor from interfering with the cars performance?
Thanks again!!
if you know some 1 who knows a bit about electrics get them to have a look but other wise take it to a auto elec an get them to have a look some times the put your car on a machine an it detects any faults in the wiring
you might even be able to get a activator programed for your alarm i dont know much about alarms so not sure what to do if u still want it
you might be able to get it disconnected for the time being an see if it fixes the problem and then later when you get some extra cash get it re connected properly with a activator pad
but i just got them to disconnect the immobiliser completely it was about a 10 min job an cost $35
Put the computer in diagnostic mode.
To do this you jumper (connect with piece of wire) pins A & B together in the diagnostic connector. If you get a workshop type manual for your car it will be fairly clearly laid out.
The computer will report its faults through the engine light flashing in a certain order when the ignition is turned on. Any workshop type manual will have all this information and all the error codes.
For the car to run properly at idle a few sensors need to be working. MAP Sensor (Manifold Absolute Presure), Idle air control, throtle position sensor (not likely to have probs), and most comonly the O2 sensor found in the exhaust manifold. The computer will generally do a pretty good job of letting you know if you have one or more of these faults (provided you put it in diagnosis mode).
You will also find more info on the diagnosis connector by doing a search in google.
BTW just my opinion, I dont think the imobiliser has anything to do with poor running. It has a failsafe to make sure it cant imobilize a running engine.
Good Luck
