Ok, well im starting to get serious about starting a project of building a motor to put in a car of choice later on. First im going to build the motor. I want to do a 355 with some sort of blower to get a nice power figure. I have decided to stroke the 5ltr rather than droppin in an LS1 for many reasons so i'm just after a bit of advice and such as to the process of building a strong, powerful 355.
I currently have my eye on a 5ltr out of a VP that is in pieces which will come with a brand new stroker crank to suit. I know this is going to be a long and costly process but i'm up for it as i have support from my dad who is a mechanic and helped me build my last motor. So i have a few questions to ask.
- What specs have you built to in the past?
- What parts do you recommend?
- When building the motor, obviously i need eveything to suit eachother (crank, rods, pistons, cam). What am i look for with this?
- What compression should i be aiming for if i'm going to bolt on a supercharger (most likely sidemount)?
- Anyone recommend a seller to buy the parts from?
- What mods should i do to the block and heads to achieve around 500hp with the blower?
- Which cam should i be looking at?
- What size injectors and fuel system should i be buying?
- Any recommendations for workshops in the south Brisbane area?
- I will most likely be ditching the banana manifold and putting on a more high performance manifold with twin throttle bodies (undecided yet), any ideas?
I will be putting in the heads to be done (What should i get done to them?), and block to be cleaned and put together professionally once i have all the parts as im not confident in doing so myself and id like it to be done properly the first time. Should i be looking at trying to improve the oil or water system inside the engine while im at it?
And yeah just put in any of your advice or opinions on the build. I'm open to all ideas referring to my build. The motor will eventually be put into a VN or VP, havnt decided yet, and will be my pride and joy, it wont be used for drift or drag or racing, just a beautiful car to drive when i feel like it. I would like 500hp+ atw and once the motor is in the car i will look at other mods to the car itself to achieve good quarter mile times.
Thanks guys and i hope to get some good info from here.
Hey buddy could trying talking to JECS he has one serious tough 355 give him a pm and ask for a few pointers
how long is a piece of string?
500rwhp is a decent target and won't be cheap. to make 500rwhp you will need to make more then 650bhp (flywheel)
by side mount you mean a raptor or vortec style blower? ideal CR to suit the blower really depends on the entire combination but for your target i'd imagine a decent amount of boost will be required so i'd suggest about 8.0-8.5:1 and forged pistons. do you know what crank comes with the block as there are stroker cranks and then there are cheap copies that just aren't worth the risk. reputable brands only really. CSR, COME, Harrop and Scat. forget eagle and procomp
your best bet is to either talk to someone with a similar combo or a engine builder who will have a better idea of exactly what is required

Thanks for your replies guys. Ok cool ill note that compression ratio down. Yea, i think easiest option for me would be a Raptor or similar brand supercharger as you mentioned. I believe the crank with the motor is an Eagle crank. So from what you've said i might give it a miss. Ill probly just start off with buying an engine first, stripping it and then might buy a kit that would include most things i need. Would definatly be keen to go forged internals as i wouldnt bother doing it if i didnt know it was going to be (semi) reliable.
Thanks again.
hay to go 355 you will need to notch the block to fit the crank if you use a vp block vt block this is already done. use chev 6inch h beam 350 rods thay are longer less bore scuffing (more reliable) and ur crank will need to sute chev rods. if ur going s/c you will need dished forged pistons if you are going over 8 psi. dont have the comp ratio over 8:0.1. you will need a rising rate fule reg, injectors depends on hp for. get a c.o.m.e inlet manifold. and a high energy sump iv had a blow up because a didnt have one. and remove the baffles in ur rocker covers thay are behind the breathers as soon as you maintain high revs the rocker covers start to fill with oil about an inch it will start pumping the oil into the inlet manifold and will start blowing smoke if you havent hooked up an oil catch can. good luck!
