I AM almost there with my engine. Just had a whole lot of work done to it with a almost complete rebuild and have now put it back in the car. There seems to be a coolant leak somewhere. I filled up the radiator today and heard a dripping sound from the top drivers side of the engine. When i opened the engine sump plug coolant pissed out. Now i had no oil in the engine for fear the coolant was still leaking as this is not the first time it has happen. When the engine was out i removed the head gaskets and added silicon to them before refitting as i had previously clean up the inlet manifold with a wire brush and left some marks. After adding the silicon i thought this might stop the leak. When i took the manifold off the first time i saw coolant running along the gasket and into the heads sitting on the valves. Like i said ive since added silicon and still a leak. The car had not started its all leaked from gravity, any ideas. Its a very obvious leakelp. Please someone h

well i can get pictures i guess but the engine is back together and is sitting back in the car so not sure if pics will help much, i didn't know if this is a problem that any one else has ran into in the past and knows what it may be. By the sounds of water flow i heard at the top of the engine it sounded pretty significant and from a decent whole somewhere. its got my knackered.
If you have series 2 or VP heads fitted with the seris 1 manifold, you'll need to refit 2 welsh plugs which are remove for the series 2 manifolds.
Don't see how coolant can get in those holes as they are beyond the manifold. Just did the exercise myself and fitted the welsh plugs.
yeah not sure about the welsh plugs, the heads do have welsh plugs already fitted. The leak was internal and it sounds like pouring water, i did use a drill and wire brush to clean the manifold. i did apply sealant but wondering if i didnt put enough sealant on would that cause the leak. also did not want to apply to much for fear of it spreading and blocking the inlets. any views on this. Still suspect something else but don;t know what. its a tough one
Depending on how stiff the wire brush was, it could cause a problem if you go over the same small section over and over again but it sounds like the leak you have is worse than that would cause. If you are worried, you can check it with a straight edge anyway. Maybe check the coolant hoses as they may be routed incorrectly. Apart from that, I am at a bit of a loss. It could be time to remove tha manifold again and try to see where the coolant is coming in from.
pull your heads and inlet maniflod off while there off look for what could be causing it, then replace the inlet manifold gasket and head gaskets. they should not need silicone to seal, the gaskets them selves will do the job.
ok kinda certain its the manifold. I used a wire brush on a drill and there was some extensive corrosion around the water jackets so id say i went to deep with the brush and thats whats causing the leak, can anyone confirm my theory
I've had the top water outlet and timing cover both corrode right through, so it's possible. The moral of the story is to always use the correct green corrosion inhibitor in the engine.
yeah when i got the engine i decided to rebuild straight away it so must of been the previous owner
ok ive just got another manifold from the wreckers, i checked it with a straight edge and its not warped or out of shape, its all square, ive put it on and applied a small amount of sealant and their is still the same leak, water goes straight into the sump. This has made me think what other places can water get in and all i come up with was the front timing cover, perhaps its leaking from the water jackets there. Is this a possibility. Also i spoke to a mate who said something about a seal and a plate located near the rear main seal ;n the actual casting of the block, but i can't picture what he is talking about but he claims its also another way water can get in. can anyone verify what he means.
